AbstractThe discussions on the Pure Land in Chinese Buddhism before Shan-dao (613-681) of Tang can be represented by the doctrine of Hui-yuan (523-592) of Sui,who was Shan-dao's senior by 90 years. Only the Hui-yuan's doctrine seems to contribute to the completion of Shan-dao's Pure Land Buddhism, because there were no marks that the doctrines of Zhi-yi (538-597),who was one of Shan-dao's contemporary, and of Ji-zang (549-623),who was Shan-dao's junior, pervaded in Chinese Buddhism. Hui-yuan's doctrine belongs to Holy Path, so is of self-effort and of difficult practice, because his standpoint on the Pure Land and Amida-Buddha was ordinary one. His Pure Land Buddhism is only theoretical, and cannot be of faith. At Hui-yuan's time,Tan-luan's Pure Land Buddhism began to pervade in China. His doctrine was established on the faith to Amida-Buddha. It was of Amida-Buddha's power and of easy practice,in contrast with Hui-yuan's one. And Hui-yuan's doctrine contains contradictions with Tan-luan's Pure Land Buddhism. Hui-yuan's doctrine contradicts with Tan-luan's one on these points:he admits the parinirvana of Amida-buddha which is based on Guan-shi-yin-pu-sa-shou-ji-jing,he regards Pure Land and Amida-Buddha as nirmana-kaya and its ksetra. Dao-chao (562-645),Jia-cai (627-649 ca.) and other masters refuted Hui-yuan's opinion. But Dao-chao's refutation in his An-le-ji is not clear, and Jia-cai in his Jin-tu-lun only maintained Pure Land and Amida-Buddha in common between nirmana-kaya and sambhogya-kaya, so he was not able to find solution to Hui-yuan's opinion. Shan-dao appeared in such a situation.

San-dao established the doctrine of Pure Land Buddhism with the concept of the pure faith to Amida-Buddha in China. On this paper,I make a general survey of the background of his Pure Land Buddhism and discuss its formation and characteristics.
