Abstract「阿陀那識」於《解深密經》(以下簡稱為《深密》)中主是就能執持根身而立名,然而隨唯識思想的演變,阿陀那識的義涵及定位顯然已有所改變,即前. 後期對「阿陀那識」的詮述似乎不同. 如此,在第二章想藉著梵文語法來探尋阿陀那識的語義,以做為問題深入的起始點. 根據《深密》等之敘述及現代人的研究,阿陀那識具:(1)持令根身令不失壞; (2)執著根身為自體的二種性格,換句話說──《深密》所述之阿陀那識具「七. 八」二識未分的統一性. 那麼早期所說的「阿陀那識」即未曾將第七識的「執取性質」別立出來. 此顯然與後代論師-(1)玄奘法師所說阿陀那識是第八識異名,非第七識; 及(2)真諦法師所說阿陀那識唯第七識等,將七. 八二識作法相上的分割之見解皆有差異. 從這可看出阿陀那識被定位為:一是具「七. 八」二識未分的特性; 一是單獨具第八識或第七識的性質. 另外,第四章則針對真諦. 玄奘二師所傳──對「第七識」提出一些看法. 如比照二師的譯本可知針對「第七識」的解說是一致的,因此筆者以為只是「名稱」安立不同,並非是義理上的衝突. 真諦在第七識上是保留早期阿陀那識的原意; 但就玄奘而言,第八識亦保留了《深密》中阿陀那識一分執持根身的功能性.
