AbstractThe BDK English Tripitaka Series was started by the late Dr. Rev. Yehan Numata, founder of the Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai (BDK) [Society for the Promotion of Buddhism]. The goal of this series is to make available in the English language the Buddhist scriptures and commentaries of the Sino-Japanese edition of the "Taisho Tripitaka." Scholars and specialists from throughout the world have been enlisted to translate the selected texts into English. When completed, the one-hundred eight volumes will comprise the First Series of the BDK English Tripitaka.
Translated from the Chinese by Dr. Charles Willemen, this text is based on the Dhammapada of which approximately two-thirds of the verses appear in this volume. What is unique about this BDK presentation of the Dhammpada is that at the start of each chapter in this book, a number of verses are quoted, followed by tales relating the events surrounding the origin of each verse. In terms of Buddhist literature, the Dhammapada is probably the most translated Buddhist text in the world.
