Biotechnology is closely related to the future of mankind. While we have the opportunity to open the ”book of life” and solve the riddles about birth, aging, sickness and death, we should bear in mind that life has spiritual ethics and values beyond human flesh. This paper approaches the issue from the perspectives of ”life-and-death studies” and ”gene modification” to investigate the impact of biotechnology on bioethics. What the writer means by ”life-and-death studies” includes euthanasia, abortion, cloning (reproduction) technology, and stem cell studies; involving the right to life and the right to live, these are the ethical issues of medicine. And ”gene modification” refers to the human genome project, gene therapy and gene modified food. It seems to indicate that mankind may transcend the substance of human life and even destroy the earthly balance and the balance between Man and Nature when they are reading life, changing life and creating life. This is a serious topic that we have to deal with.
