Abstract | Gross shares some reflections on the community and its survival. Specifically, she reflects on the declining social capital and gives several suggestions on what might be done about it. Among other things, Putman's sociological analysis might be even more forceful if seen in light of the wider and longer perspectives of anthropology and women's history, especially as these two disciplines have looked at the interrelated issues of gender, work, and family.
