Abstract | 中國佛教的制度建設往往具有滯後性與非系統性。滯後性與非系統性的結果最終只能指向「中國化」向度。在這一制度中國化的過程中,東晉的道安、廬山慧遠及南山律宗創始人道宣、禪宗的百丈懷海、天台宗知禮和遵式等等,都做出了各自的貢獻。在佛教仍然能夠保持其主流文化之重要組成部份的地位之時,佛教制度的中國化革新仍然能夠遵循在「契理契機」前提下的「與時俱進」。而在元代之後,隨著中國佛教逐漸「邊緣化」與「民間化」,中國佛教制度便同時背離了「契理契機」與「與時俱進」的原則,佛教無論在較一方面,還是在各種制度方面,都停滯不前了。
The Chinese Buddhist system has always been sluggish and unsystematic in its development, resulting often in the Sincization of the system. During the process of Sinicization many Buddhists in different ages made their own contributions. At the time when Buddhism still remained in the mainstream of Chinese culture, it was gradually undergoing the reforming and renovating process of Sinicization without deviating from its basic ideas and principles. But under the influence of marginalization and popularization after Yuan Dynasty, Chinese Buddhism started to dicerge from some of its original principles, and stopped its development in doctrines and institutions.
