Abstract佛教思想的兩大基石,即緣起理論與業力學說之間,一直存在著一種內在的不一致性,由此必然導致僧伽內部的思想分裂。小乘部派佛學和大乘中觀學都在自己的立場上企圖解決這一理論上的矛盾,但是這些嘗試都存在著自身的困難,不能導向問題的最終解決。大乘瑜珈行派唯識種子學說的提出,在一定意義上是對這一理論的困境的回應。唯識學首先攝諸功能歸於本識,然後在”萬法唯識”的基礎上建立起種子與現行的邏輯關係,從而將舊有的功能學說引入本體論哲學的層面。而阿賴耶識緣起理論的建立,使緣起論與業力說在種子與現行互動的因果關係的基礎上融貫一致。
