| Abstract | 本文嘗試檢視Richard Gombrich如何探討佛陀原意的論點與方法。其研究運用早期佛教的巴利經典文獻，特別針對佛陀所反對的婆羅門教法，以及據此而提出的某些佛教重要名相或教義。他主張在兩者的互動中，我們必須配合婆羅門教的典籍與想法，才能夠追溯佛陀的原意。其中，佛陀本人在面對婆羅門教時，經常應用隱喻與暗諷來解釋重要的觀念，因此這些觀念的解讀必須放置在婆羅門教的文脈下才有辦法還原。同時，他批判後來的注釋書的紛雜解說因為不了解此層關係而有錯失原意之虞。本文彙整當代學者回應Gombrich觀點的數篇評論，並加上筆者對其所持「與梵合一等同於解脫境界(涅槃)」論點的批評，以作為檢討其方法學上所顯示的某些缺失。
