AbstractThe intention of this paper is to give an overview of both the Informal and Formal Educational aspects of the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order begun by Venerable Master Hsing Yun in Taiwan during the 1950's. His re-establishment of the humanistic aspect of Buddhism (how to live more fully in a healthy and beneficial way in this lifetime) is the focus of the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order.

An introduction to the basic goals of the Fo Guang Shan educational system will be given as well as a description of some of the ways they are carried out within the many institutions and countries where Fo Guang Shan is present. This research will also present the focus and methods used in these educational practices. Fo Guang Shan has expanded rapidly world-wide over the last 40 years. It has opened up millions of people to the basic philosophy and practices of humanistic Buddhism through its educational system. An overview of the role of education in that process is the main focus of this research presentation.
