AbstractThe article examines slavery or servitude among candidate Buddhist monks and nuns in India, based on observations of the Mulasarvastivadin list cited in various Sanskrit, Tibetan and Nepalese manuscripts from the 7th through the 13th centuries. The author cites the commentary of Kalyanamitra to explain monastic procedures and ordination of monks and nuns. The definitions of monastic servitude provided by Kalyanamitra are discussed.
