AbstractThe oldest Buddhist texts refer to a number of subjects of meditation. In this article I examine one specific method of meditation: meditation on the breath and especially one particular source for this method: the canonical Ānāpānassatisutta or Discourse on Mindfulness with In and Out Breathing. Within that discourse we find set out a sequence of sixteen stages of development. The overall structure of the first three tetrads is considered before turning to the final tetrad. A picture emerges of the original meaning of the formula and how it developed in the light of abhidha(r)mma and commentarial interpretations.
