The shapes of the caves in the Yungang Grottoes demonstrated the features of the architectures of the Northern Wei dynasty. The wooden architectures of the Northern Wei dynasty are hardly found so far at presend. The features of the shapes of the caves in the Yungang Grottoes can be rated as the important materials to the study of the history of the ancient Chinese architecture. The caves in the Yungang Grottoes can be divided into four types based on when they are carved and how they evolved. This article aims to make a preliminary study of the features of the four types of the caves in the Yungang Grottoes.
