Note | It is not known who compiled the Repentance Before Eighty-Eight Buddhas, but the sources of the eighty-eight names are known. The names of the first fifty-three Buddhas are found in the Sutra Spoken by the Buddha on the Contemplation of Bodhisattvas King of Medicines and Supreme Medicine (佛說觀藥王藥上二菩薩經), and the remaining thirty-five names are cited in the Mahäratnakütasütra (大寶積經). The Buddha Sakyamuni's name is the dividing point between the two lists. |
