NoteBuddhism in China: Collected Papers of Erik Zürcher. By Erik Zürcher. Brill Academic Pub, April 17, 2014. 675 pages. ISBN-10: 9004274715 ISBN-13: 978-9004274716
AbstractErik Zürcher (1928–2008) was an early and influential scholar of Buddhism in China focusing on the Chinese reception of Buddhism up to the fifth century. After publishing his seminal The Buddhist Conquest of China in 1959, Zürcher remained an active scholar, but never again published a book‐length study. This present volume, edited by Silk, therefore does Buddhist studies scholars a great favor by pulling together twenty‐two articles and book chapters by Zürcher as well as five book reviews in one volume for the first time. Presented in chronological order of publication, readers are able to follow the development of Zürcher's thought on topics ranging from translation, Buddhist influence on Daoism, Eschatology, and Messianism to Buddhist art and Ming dynasty Xu Guangqi's Christian‐based anti‐Buddhist polemics. Three articles are translated into English from French for the first time, and the preface of Zürcher's little known Life of the Buddha (T. 196) is translated from Dutch by Silk. Zürcher's works are presented free of corrections, except in the case of some misquoted passages which have been corrected using the Taishô Daizôkyô. Chinese characters have been added, and pinyin is used throughout. A companion volume offering appraisals of Zürcher's work is planned. The book is a great resource for scholars of Chinese Buddhism and could make for stimulating reading in a graduate seminar on Chinese Buddhism.
