AbstractThis paper deals with the theme of giving away the body or parts of it. This theme is frequent in Buddhist literature, but also finds expression in the real life custom, attested in India and more so in China, of burning one’s own body as an act of religious fervour. The paper studies the potential link of this theme with the Vedic sacrificial tradition, and comes to the conclusion that there is no such link.
