Abstract | In this article, I would like to discuss Paritta-tika, which was written by Tejodipa in Myanmar. This Paritta-tika is supposedly a commentary book for the collection of main parittas in A.D. 17c. First of all, here, I clarify bibliographical matters of this commentary book such as the author, the date, the place and the circumstances, based on historical material and preceding studies, as much as possible. And then, I tentatively revive "an old collection book" which is the parent of current so-called Mahaparitta through considering the annotated texts of this commentary book. Over the past years, several studies have been made on religious practices with Paritta-chanting. In such studies on Paritta, It seems that little attention has been given to the process of the formation of the individual Paritta books. However, the historic study on the Paritta books should be indispensable to an all-around understanding of Paritta. Through this study, I suggest that Parittatika is an useful material to make the process of the formation of Myanmar Paritta book clear. |
