Abstract “那爛陀”是梵文Nalanda的肯譯，意譯為“施無厭”。關於寺名的來由，自古就傳說不一。相傳那爛陀寺南面有一水池，池中龍王叫那爛陀，由此得名。據《大唐西域記》卷九記載，釋迦牟尼如來佛曾在此修菩薩行，“為大國王，建都此地，悲愍眾生，好樂用給，時美其德，號施無厭，由是伽蘭因以為稱”。
