Abstract 『維摩経』(The Vimalakīrtinirdeśa)は「在家仏教の主張を明示する」経典という見方が一般的であり、『維摩経』は在家仏教運動の所産であり、維摩は在家仏教のリーダーあるとの見方が問題なく受け入れられている。しかし、かつては『維摩経』の「居士仏教としての聖道面」が強調されていたこともある。たしかに維摩は俗世間に身を置き、在家の姿をとって衆生済度に奔走している。だが、それは維摩の仮の姿(善巧方便)で、実際には阿閦如来の妙喜世界から来生している大菩薩である。

一般認為《維摩詰經》(The Vimalakīrtinirdeśa)是一部「強調在家佛教」的經典,同時認為《維摩詰經》是在家佛教運動的產物、維摩是在家佛教的領袖,這些觀點並不視為存在問題,而被人們普遍所接受。但是,也有一種觀點曾強調《維摩詰經》是「作為居士佛教的聖道面」之經典。確實維摩生活在世俗的人間世界,以在家人的姿態全力拯救普通百姓。然而這一切皆是維摩臨時性的身份(善巧方便),事實上他是來自阿閦如來妙喜世界的大菩薩。

It is commonly understood that the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa is a sūtra which clearly advocates lay Buddhism. It is generally accepted without question that the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa is the outcome of a lay Buddhist movement, and Vimalakīrti is a lay Buddhist leader. At the same time, the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa's aspect of ultimate realization for lay Buddhists has also been emphasized. It is true that Vimalakīrti lives in the world with the identity of a layman, making every effort to rescue ordinary people. However, it is said that this is his expedient identity, and in reality he is a great bodhisattva who came from the Abhirati universe of tathāgata Akṣobhya.
The Vimalakīrtinirdeśa lays out the main issues of Mahāyāna Buddhism: maturing people and purifying the buddha-field through the middle way of absolute equality based on the perfection of wisdom. Vimalakīrti dwells in the theory of the middle way, and is pure even though he is in the midst of defilements of the world. This paper first explores the issue of lay people and renunciants by considering the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa's ideas about renunciation. Then it raises the question of whether it is proper to think of the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa as the outcome of a lay Buddhist movement.
