AbstractThe present study is a comparative study between sukhavati and jingtu 淨土. The study includes four parts. First of all, a brief discussion on why Kumarajiva did not indicate sukhavati should be labeled by the term jingtu. Secondly, focusing on what the meaning of sukhavati in the Daamituo jing 大阿彌陀經, and pointing out that the sukhavati means measureless light and measureless wisdom through its connection with the name of amituofoguo 阿彌陀佛國. Thirdly, a further survey on what the origin of jingtu is. In addition to Xumoti 須摩提 and Anle 安樂, the name of sukhavati is also labeled as Wuliang qingjing foguo (tu) 無量清淨佛 國(土) in the Pingdeng jue jing 平等覺經. Because qingjing 清淨 is similar in meaning to anle 安樂 in traditional Chinese culture, 無量清淨佛國 must be derived from the Name of the Buddha, Wuliang qingjing 無量清淨, in the Pingdeng jue jing in order to correspond to anle. Finally, through evidence supporting the thesis that the term jingtu is derived from Chinese traditional culture as in traditional Chinese culture, qingjing 清淨“ pure”, is similar in meaning to anle 安樂,“ at ease and pleasure”, to ziran 自然,“ nature”, and to wuwei 無 爲,“ no-ado”.
