Abstract 有關《大乘起信論》的注疏以及現代研究中,多偏向本覺的討論,而較少論及始覺,致使始覺的基本含義與功用長期晦暗不明。本文則通過深入分析有關覺的相關段落,認為覺與不覺為心性論語境,而本覺與始覺卻為修道論語境,由此確定始覺的基本語境。進而借助古今諸多注疏家的觀點,考察始覺與其後四種覺的關係,大致分為"過程說"和"定點說"兩類。因"過程說"內有悖論,故不可用,"定點說"所確定的起點也值得商榷,故需要對四種覺逐次分析,確證相似覺為始覺最合理。而相似覺成為始覺的重要因素是初發意菩薩深信真如法,又真如即為本覺,故始覺=信本覺,由此確定始覺的基本含義。始覺也是真如用薰習的開端,此即始覺的功用。
