Abstract 涅槃是佛教的最高境界和信仰追求的最終目的,因此涅槃不僅是佛教語言文字所敘說的主要內容之一,也是圖像表達一個重要主題。隨著《涅槃經》和涅槃學在華土的廣泛流行和深入人心,相關涅槃的圖像也變得十分常見。在隋唐時期的造型藝術中,相關涅槃內容的畫面主要是描繪佛陀圓寂時場景的經變畫,表現出他的偉大和神聖。至於表達涅槃經義尤其是其影響巨大的佛性論的造型由於抽象而難以具形,所以比較罕見,除了舍利塔等因為它的佛性含義而象徵著涅槃影響的普及,成為例外。至於唐宋之後涅槃圖像的漸漸少見,除了它們內含復雜而致使造型困難外,凈土信仰及其追求至少在普遍性的意義上超越了涅槃信仰及其追求,也是一個非常重要的原因。
