AbstractNāgārjuna’s Mūlamadhyamaka-kārikā (=MMK) chapter XXIV is well known as one that deals with “Two Truths”(satyadvaya). This paper is the first part of the Tibetan text and Japanese translation of Avalokitavrata’s Prajñāparadīpa-ṭīkā (=PPrṬ) chapter XXIV, which is a subcommentary on MMK. This first part is Anusaṃdhi and Pūrvapakṣa. Anusaṃdhi is the portion that shows the relation of this chapter to the preceding chapter. In Anusaṃdhi of PPrṬ-XXIV, it is shown that this chapter’s purposes are to deny counterargument against the idea of emptiness (śūnyatā) and to emphasize that there is no intrinsic nature (svabhāva) in the Four Noble Truths (catvāri āryasatyāni). Pūrvapakṣa shows the Opponent’s counterargument. Opponent insists that if there is no intrinsic nature in the Four Noble Truths, the Four Fruits do not exist, so the Strivers for the Fruits do not exist, and the Attainers of the fruits, the Saṃgha, the Dharma and the Buddha do not exist too. Thus, the opponent insists that there is a Failure of Three Jewels to exist, and the idea of lack of intrinsic nature (niḥsvabhāva) causes these failures.
