This study is a continuation of the previous paper, “Notes on the Figures in the Story of Sadāprarudita (Part 1): Sadāprarudita,” and the focus is on the meanings behind the figure Dharmodgata. The essay attempts to understand this character from an analysis of his name and the contexts in which they appear in the story. This analysis also reflects some factual situations in Mahāyāna history during its early stage in India. The research results in several significant findings, one of which is that the description of a bodhisattva’s enjoyment of various pleasures in Mahāyāna texts is a kind of manifestation of “skillful means” (upāyakauśalya), employed by those who have realized the Truth.
