Abstract平安仏教の開創者の一人である最澄は、当時会津に居住した法相宗の学僧徳一と五年間にわたる激烈な論争を展開した。徳一は唐の玄弉によつて新たに東亜に紹介された論理的な瑜伽唯識の教学を忠実に継承していた。すなわち、玄弉以前に伝えられた瑜伽唯識派の諸学説、玄弉門下の異端学説がその主なものである。そしてこれらは、いずれも奈良時代に我が国に伝えられ、南都教学の重要な要素を形づくつていたことが推測される。本稿ではこうした観点から、奈良時代の仏教教学のうち、特に法相宗系統の思想的性格を考察し、哲学的な傾向よりも、宗教的救済論的色彩をもつていたことを指摘した。

Saichô 最澄, one of the buddhist founders in the Heian 平安 era, had been fiercely discussing for five years with Tokuichi 徳一, the learned priest of the Hossô 法相 sect who lived then in Aizu 会津 and was an earnest successor to the theory of the logical Yukayuishiki 瑜伽唯識 which was for the first time introduced into the eastern Asia by Hsüan-tsang 玄弉 of T'ang 唐. Saichô, confronted with this new theory, in turn claimed preceding theories of various sects to strengthen his own stand-point. Buddhist dogma in the Nara 奈良 era accepted miscellaneously various theories used by him. These discussions, we may say, enable us somewhat to revive the dogma in the Nara era.
