Abstract | The female body is said in the Samyuttanikaya to be handicapped by such physiological phenomena as menstruation, pregnancy and delivery, and Buddhists have a tradition that it is biologically unfavourable for becoming a buddha. So women have now difficulty in making preparations to become buddhas, but they do not have to worry about it, because their minds (vijnana) can transfer far in the future to male bodies in the course of transmigration (samsara). It is narrated in the Astasahasrikaprajnaparamita that a woman called Gangadevi was repeatedly reborn as a man in various buddha-lands (buddha-ksetra) and finally became a buddha called Suvarnapuspa. Minds transfer to new bodies one after another regardlees of species or sex. Male or female, bodies are no more than temporary containers. |
