| Abstract | 이 글은『 해심밀경』에서 설한 ‘승의제의 5상(五相)’을 중심으로 궁극적 진리와 언어의 관계를 살펴본 것이다. 유식학자들에게 진리의 문제를 다룬다는 것은 필연적으로 언어의 본성과 한계, 그리고 그 언어에 의거해 작동하는 사유의 한계를 다루는 것과 같다. 따라서 승의제의 5상에 대한 논의도 불가언설의 진리를 언어로 규정한 것이라기보다는 거기로 향하는 진정한 요가의 길을 보여주는 데 초점이 있다. 먼저, 법상학자들은 궁극적 진리는 말해질 수는 없지만 알려질 수 있는 실재라고 철저하게 이해함으로써 단지 다양한 층위의 존재와 진리를 정비한다거나 또는 언어와 사유의 근본적 결핍을 거듭 강조하는 것 이상으로 ‘참으로 있는 그대로의 세계’에 극진하게 다가가려 한다. 따라서 5상에 대한 설법에서는 맨 먼저 진리를 추구하는 자들이 진리에 관한 모든 교설들의 종교적·철학적 기초로서 받아들 여할 전제, 즉 ‘언어를 떠난 진여[離言眞如]는 성자에게 알려진 것’임 을 명확히 한다. 또한 이와 같은 5상에 대한 명상은 진리를 추구하는 자들이 상호 간의 격렬한 쟁론, 끝없는 회의와 의구심, 그리고 정신 적 자만으로부터 자기 자신을 점차로 해방시켜 가는 과정이기도 하다. 따라서 그들이 필연적으로 마주치게 될 장애에서 벗어나서 다시 그 이언진여의 세계로 나아가기 위해 관해야 할 상들로서 ‘사유의 영역을 넘어선 모습, 제법과의 동일성·차이성을 넘어선 모습, 그리고 모든 법에 편재해 있는 한 맛의 모습’ 등을 설한다.
The purpose of this treatise is to examine the relation between truth and word in Chinese yogācāra buddhism. In the mind-only school, the problem of truth necessarily connotes the limitation of the word and thinking, the function of which is based on the word. Therefore, discussions of the five characters(五相) of the Ultimate Truth(勝義諦) in Saṃdhinirmocana-sūtra (解深密經) are focused not on the explanation of the nature of the truth beyond description, but on showing yogi the true way of yoga to it. At first, by thoroughly understanding the ultimate truth to be known in spite of its being indescribable, Fa-hsiang(法相) scholars try to approach the thusness(眞如) of what is, more than they can arrange the various beings and truths, or repeat the fundamental lack of the word and thinking. Accordingly, in the argument of the five characters, they clearly designate the religious and philosophical basis of all theories about truth, that is, the thusness beyond description (離言眞如) is known to saints . In the next place, the meditation of the five characters is for yogi to free himself from violent fights, endless doubts and spiritual conceits. Therefore, to make yogi get out of those obstructions which they inevitably confront and to approach the thusness beyond description, the scripture teaches meditation on the tree characters: the character of being beyond thinking, that of not being able to speak the sameness and difference between the ultimate truth and all dharmas, and that of a good flavor(一味) which is omnipresent in all dharmas. |
