Abstract진표가 한국사에서 중요하게 다루어지는 이유는 미륵신앙과 점찰법회를 앞세운 그의 교화 활동이 신라 사회에서 파급력이 있었고, 제자들을 통해 고려시대, 나아가 오늘날까지도 계승되는 생명력을 지녔기 때문이다. 서로 다른 이야기를 전하는 진표 기록에서 공통되는 요소는 금산사, 지장보살 및 미륵보살, 점찰법회, 계법이다. 이것이 8세기 진표의 불교 이해를 설명할 수 있는 요소가 아닌가 생각한다. 이 가운데 진표 미륵신앙의 성격에 대해 재조명해보았다.
진표의 미록보살과의 만남은 관불삼매(觀佛三昧)를 통한 선정 체험이었던 것 같다. 이 사실이 이후 진표가 미륵보살을 직접 만났고, 미륵보살의 손가락뼈를 받았다는 영험담으로 변모하면서 일반민들의 불교에의 귀의를 적극 유도하였다. 진표는 미륵보살이 있는 도솔천에의 상생을 권함으로써 새로운 과보(果報)를 받을 수 있다는 기대감을 심어주었고, 도솔천 상생의 방법으로 계법(戒法)을 지킬 것을 강조하였다. 이는 진표가 점찰법회(占察法會)를 시행하였던 목적과도 상통한다. 진표는 점찰법을 행하여 개개인의 점괘에 따라 선악의 업보를 판단함으로써 각자 자신의 업보를 알게 하고, 거기에 맞게 계를 주고 참회 정진하게 함으로써 과보를 바꿀 수 있다고 보았다, 진표의 미륵신앙을 법상종(法相宗)의 테두리 속에서 보는 연구들이 많은데, 오히려 율사(律師)로서의 진표의 역할을 재조명해야 하지 않을까 한다.

The 8th century master Jinpyo (眞表) has been considerably emphasized in the Buddhist history of Korea because his teaching of Maitreya faith and divination service had far-reaching effects on Silla society. Further, his influence had a vitality which was transmitted by his disciples up the present. The common topics found in the many different Jinpyo-related texts are Geumsansa temple, Maitreya faith, divination service, and vinaya teachings. In particular, this paper re-examines the characteristics of Jinpyo's Maitreya faith.
Jinpyo's encounter with Maitreya Bodhisattva seems to have been an experience of meditative concentration by entering samādhi on the characteristic marks of a Buddha (觀佛三昧). Through word of mouth, this experience changed into a story of
meeting the Maitreya Bodhisattva directly, and then to a story of spiritual efficacy when he received Maitreya Bodhisattva's fingerbone. These stories actively guided the general public to take refuge in Buddhism. Jinpyo led many common people to the expectation of reaping the fruit of good karma by keeping the precepts and being reborn in Tuṣita Heaven, where Maitreya Bodhisattva resides. This is line with the purpose of the divination service of Jinpyo. He believed that one's individual karma can be known by divination. According to the individual divinatory sign, Jinpyo gave the proper precepts to each individual according to their karma and had them practice repentance in order to improve their karma.
There are many studies of Jinpyo that tries to understand his Buddhism through the perspective of the Consciousness-only school (法相宗 Dharma-character school). However, we have to reconsider the grounds for this perspective and re-examine the role of Master Jinpyo as preceptor (律師).
