AbstractThis paper is the second part of an annotated Japanese translation of Louis de la Vallée Poussin’s French translation of Nyāyānusāra 50-52 (Taisho 29, pp. 621-636), an Abhidharma text discussing the Sarvāstivādin theory of the real existence of dharmas in the three time periods.
Dārṣṭāntikas present seven examples of mental cognitions of non-existents. Saṃghabhadra, however, points out that the objects of cognition in all seven ex- amples are not without foundation of their existence, therefore they are not completely non-existing.
Saṃghabhadra further argues that, in the past or future time periods, not only nominal existents exist but also substantial existents on which those nominal existents in the past or future depend. The nominal existents in the past exist depending on the substantial existents in the past; and the future nominal existents exist depending on the substantial existents in the future, respectively. However, nominal existents in the past or future do not exist depending on substantial existents in the present time.
Finally Saṃghabhadra maintains that although the manners of existence (性類 xinglei) of dharmas are different, the essential characteristics (体相 tixiang) of dharmas are the same, in their successive existences, or simultaneous existence.
