| Abstract | 『미타증성게』는 원효의 정토사상을 알 수 있는 텍스트이다. 8구로 이루어진 짧은 시인데, 다행히 보조지눌의 『절요』에 인용됨으로써 전해질 수 있었다. 선행연구로서 김상현과 한태식(보광)의 연구가 있지만, 공통적으로 보조지눌의 『미타증성게』 인용을 해석학적 이해의 한 선례로 받아들이지 못하고 말았다. 보조는 돈오점수설을 지지하는 하나의 전거로서 『미타증성게』를 인용하였으나, 김상현과 한태식(보광)은 공히 『미타증성게』에 나타난 돈오점수설의 맥락이 무엇인지 천착하지 않았다.
이 글은 바로 이 점에서 출발하였다. 보조의 돈오점수설은 화엄사상의 기초 위에 놓여있다. 첫째, 발심하는 그 순간이 바로 성불이라는 화엄의 관점이 곧 먼저 돈오를 하고 나서 하는 점수만이 진정한 수행이라는 돈오점수설을 지지하고 있었던 것이다. 둘째, 돈오 이후의 수행이라는 점수 그 자체는 자기의 번뇌를 제거해 가는 자리적 차원의 점수, 즉 유식적 점수가 아니라, 널리 중생을 이롭게 한다는 화엄적 차원의 보현행이었다.
과연 『미타증성게』의 제3-4구에서는 초발심이 곧 모든 대립을 넘어서 도에 들어가는 것이라는 입장이 표명되어 있었고, 또 제5구 이하에서는 중생을 이롭게 하기 위한 구체적 원행(願行)이 제시되는 구조였다.
이렇게 『미타증성게』를 이해하고 나면, 다시 하나의 문제가 더 떠오른다. 바로 『미타증성게』와 『무량수경』의 관계이다. 『미타증성게』는 제1-2구와 7구의 구절로만 보더라도, 그것이 『무량수경』과 밀접한 관련이 있다는 점은 의심할 여지가 없다. 그렇긴 하지만, 바로 그렇기 때문에 과연 한태식(보광)이 생각하는 것처럼, 『미타증성게』를 『무량수경』의 내용을 요약하는 중송(重頌)이라고까지 평가할 수 있을 것인가? 나는 그렇지 않다고 보았다.
왜냐하면 『미타증성게』와 『무량수경』 사이에는 거리가 존재하기 때문이다. 즉 『미타증성게』에 나타난 원효의 『무량수경』 이해에는 원효의 해석학적 선이해(hermeneutical pre-understanding)가 투영되어 있었다. 그리고 그 해석학적 선이해는 바로 화엄사상이었다. 돈오적인 것이었다. 그런데 과연 『무량수경』도 그렇게 법장보살의 성불이 돈오적이었다고 말하고 있는 것일까? 그렇지 않다. 『무량수경』에서 법장보살의 성불은 5겁이라는 긴 시간이 걸렸으며, 수행의 내용은 보살행이었다. 그것도 돈오 이전의 수행이었다.
“A Verse on Amita Buddha’s Pure Nature” is a text in which Wonhyo’s view on Pure Land is well portrayed. Bojo Chinul cited the poem as one source which supports the Sudden Enlightenment Gradual Cultivation theory, but Kim Sanghyun and Bo-kwang did not scrutinize the context of the theory that appeared in “A Verse on Amita Buddha’s Pure Nature.”
This article began from that point. Bojo Chinul’s Sudden Enlightenment and Gradual Cultivation theory is based on Avatamsaka. First, the perspective of Avatamsaka, which claims that the moment of spiritual awakening is the moment of attaining Buddhahood, had actually supported the Sudden Enlightenment and Gradual Cultivation theory. Second, gradual cultivation, which is the self-discipline after sudden enlightenment, was the Samantabhadra practice in the Avataṁsaka dimension, which extensively benefits mankind.
After understanding “A Verse on Amita Buddha’s Pure Nature,” another problem surfaces: The distance between “A Verse on Amita Buddha’s Pure Nature” and Sukhavatīvyūhasūtra. Can the verse be evaluated as the geya (repeated praise) which summarizes the contents of the sutra?
I did not see it. It is because some distance exists between “A Verse on Amita Buddha’s Pure Nature” and Sukhavatīvyūhasūtra. That is, Wonhyo’s hermeneutical pre-understanding of Sukhavatīvyūhasūtra is reflected in the verse, and that understanding is based on Avataṁsaka thought, or sudden enlightenment. On the other hand, Dharmākara Bodhisattva’s attaining Buddhahood in Sukhavatīvyūhasūtra took five kalpas after the practices of the bodhisattva path. It was the self-discipline prior to sudden enlightenment.
