AbstractThis is the third part of our critical Tibetan text and Japanese translation of Avalokitavrata’s Prajñāpradīpa-ṭīkā chapter XXIV, which is a subcommentary on Nāgārjuna’s Mūlamadhyamakakārikā. In all three parts of our Tibetan edition, we have used English to benefit non-Japanese speakers.
In the section edited in this paper, Avalokitavrata (and also Bhāviveka) warns against a wrong view of emptiness by using the similes of a snake mishandled and a spell miscast. To show the risks of the teaching of emptiness, he refers to the episode of Buddha’s silence when Brahmā asked him to preach the content of awakening. It could be said these parts of Avalokitavrata’s subcommentary are literarily rich. His quotations from canonical texts in this section are also interesting. Avalokitavrata tries to prove the Mādhyamika’s position, that basic Buddhist concepts like the Four Noble Truths are possible only because everything is empty, by citing even the canon of the Śrāvakas. In other words, Avalokitavrata seeks to authorize this Mahāyāna view by using non-Mahāyāna text.
