| Abstract | ｢가르침의 바퀴를 처음 돌림｣에 나타나는 ‘고귀한 (이의) 네 진리’를 나타내는 표현 들은 표면적인 문법면에서 심각한 문제를 안고 있다. 이 문제는 이미 벨러(F. Weller)가 진지하게 다루기 시작했고, 노먼(K. R. Norman)이 가장 설득력 있는 방식으로 해명하였 다. 그 내용은 “idaṃ dukkham”과 같은 단순한 표현 형태가 나중에 “ariya-sacca”라는 어구의 삽입을 통해 “idaṃ-dukkha-m-ariya-sacca”라는 통상적인 문법에 어긋나는 겹낱말을 구성하게 되었다는 것이다. 여기에 나타나는 모음충돌을 피하기 위해 싼디로 삽입된 -m-이 나중에 오해를 불러일으키는 출발점이 된다.
이러한 불교 전승사와 인도 언어사의 역사적 발전상에 대한 이해를 토대로 삼은 노먼의 탁월한 해명에도 불구하고, 현재 전승되는 형태의 텍스트 자체에 몰역사적으로 정당성을 부여하면서 불교사상사의 내용을 새롭게 이해해 보고자하는 시도들이 최근들어 제기되고 있다. 이러한 시도들은 상충되는 내용을 포괄하기 위한 과잉해석에 기초할 수밖에 없고, 이러한 과잉해석은 불교전통뿐 아니라 인도문화사 전반에 대한 부정확한 이해에 기초하고 있다는 것을 밝히고자 한다. 구체적으로 “진리”(sacca) 개념을 중심으로 한 하비(P. Harvey)의 해석을 예로 들어서, 그 구조적인 오류를 지적하고자 한다. 이는 구체적인 한 해석의 오류를 밝히는 것을 통해 ｢가르침의 바퀴를 처음 돌림｣에 투영되어 있는 서로 일관되지 않은 층위들이 맞물려 있는 텍스트의 구조적인 문제를 드러내는 일을 포함하게 되고, 나아가 불교전승의 역사적 전개 양상을 불교 교리체계의 구축이라는 측면에서, 특히나 중요한 ‘고귀한 (이의) 네 진리’를 중심으로 해서 명확하게 드러내 주게 될 것이다.
The formulation of the four Ariya-saccas in the Dhammacakkappavattana has long attracted the attention of scholars. F. Weller has already pointed out long ago that the peculiarity in the Pāli text transmission of the Dhammacakkappavattana is strongly intertwined with this problem. The historical context in which the problematic formulations of the four Ariya-saccas emerged was elucidated in the most plausible way in K. R. Norman s remarkable publication.
Various attempts, however, have recently been made to interpret the contents of the four Ariya-saccas accepting the formulations of them in the Pāli text as it is given at present. In this paper, the over-interpretation of E. Shulman and P. Harvey will be critically reviewed, so that the problems of non-historical approach to the multi-layered text structures composed of different elements of historical developments can be revealed. As an exemplary case, some interpretative problems not solved by P. Harvey as to the formulation of the Ariya-sacca in the Dhammacakkappavattana will be discussed with a view that some problems are inherent in the historical multi-layering of the text. The discussions of other scholars on the structural analysis of the Dhammacakkappavattana will be partly reviewed to demonstrate that some interpretative problems with regard to the formulation of the four Ariya-saccas are inevitably connected with the different layers of the text itself, which present implicitly the disparity among the layers in their understanding and contextualizing the Ariya-sacca.
