| Abstract | 신라오대산은 선덕여왕 때 자장에 의해서, 중국 산서성 오대산의 문수신앙이 이식된 것이다. 그러나 신라오대산은 통일신라에 이르면 보천과 효명에 의해서 문수를 중심으로 하는 오만진신신앙으로 변모한다. 이는 중국오대산과는 다른 신라불교만의 특징이자, 당시에 유행하던 대승불교의 보살신앙을 통합하고 있다는 점에서 주목된다.
본고는 지금까지 제대로 검토되지 못했던 오만진신신앙에 대해서 검토해 본 것이다. 오만진신 구조와 관련해서는 민지의 『오대산사적기』와 일연의 『삼국유사』 속 기록이 전해지는데, 양자 사이에는 일부 상이점이 존재한다.
지금까지 오만진신신앙에 대해서는 일연의 기록을 중심으로 하고 민지의 것을 보충적으로 사용했다. 그러나 본고에서는 민지의 기록에 보다 집중해서, 일연의 오만진신구조 기록의 문제점을 지적하고, 이의 변화 양상과 타당성을 정리해 보고자 하였다.
이를 통해서 알 수 있는 것은 오대산의 동대에서 확인되는 관음신앙의 배경에 아축불과 약사여래도 존재한다는 점, 그리고 북대의 오백나한신앙이 사실은 미륵신앙에서 변모한 것이라는 점이다.
이 중 본고에서 중시한 부분은 북대의 신앙변화이다. 이는 북대 신앙의 중심이 오백 나한이 될 경우에, 오만진신에서 5만이라는 숫자적인 정합성이 무너지며 오대가 모두 보살신앙 중심인 것과 배치(背馳)하기 때문이다. 이 문제를 해소하는 것이 민지의 기록에서 확인되는 미륵신앙의 모습이며, 이를 통해서 통일신라의 미륵신앙 요소가 고려 시대에 오백나한으로 변모된 정황을 판단해 볼 수 있게 된다.
이상의 오대산신앙의 변화양상을 통해서, 신앙구조 원형에 대한 보다 정확한 이해에 도달하게 된다.
Silla Odaesan (新羅 五臺山) was the mountain where the Manjusri Faith of Chinese Odaesan (五台山, Wutai Mountain) in Shanxi Province was implanted by Jajang (慈藏, 生594-599∼沒653-655) during the reign of Queen Seondeok from Silla Kingdom. However, during the Unified Silla, Odaesan was transformed into the place for the Omanjinsin Faith (五萬眞身信仰, Fifty-thousand True Body Faith, faith in the manifestation of fifty-thousand bodhisattva and arhats), with Manjusri as a main figure, by Bocheon (寶川) and Hyomyeong (孝明).
This paper examines the Fifty-thousand True Body Faith that has not been properly examined until now, based on the two records for the religious structure of the Faith: Minji (閔漬) s Odaesan Sajeokgi (五臺山事蹟記) and Ilyeon (一然) s Samguk Yusa (三國遺事, Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms). However, there are some differences between the two.
So far, as for the Fifty-thousand True Body Faith, Ilyeon’s record has been mainly studied and Minji’s was used just to supplement it. However, this paper will focus more on Minji s record, pointing out the problems in the Ilyeon’s and also will summarize the phase of change and its validity.
After this, it turned out that there exist Akṣobhya-buddha (阿閦佛) and Bhaiṣajyaguru-tathāgata (藥師如來) in the background of the Avalokiteshvara Faith, which is found in Dongdae (東臺, East Dae) of Odaesan, and that the Five Hundred Arhat Faith (五百羅漢信仰) of Bukdae (北臺, North Dae) was actually transformed from Maitreya Faith (彌勒信仰).
The most important part of this paper is the faith change in Bukdae. The problem is that the numerical coherence with the Fifty-thousand True Body is broken when the five hundred Arhats become the center of the Bukdae Faith, and it is also not coherent with the fact that all the five Daes centered on the Bodhisattva Faith. This problem can be solved through the Maitreya Faith found in Minji s records and, through this, we can judge the situation in which the elements of Maitreya Faith of Unified Shilla were transformed into Five Hundred Arhat Faith of the Goryeo Period.
