The Thousand-Buddha Monastery in the Lamamao Mountain is an important Buddhist site in Linyou County, Shaanxi Province. This article is a report of the archaeological investigation and presents basic information about the Buddhist grottoes, niches, and statues at the site. The site includes three seated Buddha figures in the cave (No.2) dating to the Emperor Gaozong (r. 649~683) period, or the early Tang Dynasty. The main imagery niche of the Thousand-Buddha cliff (No.4) and the life-sized standing Buddha figure (No.3) was carved in the late eighth century, or in the middle Tang Dynasty, and the imagery niches in No.1 and No.5 cave, as well as the Thousand-Buddha figures of No.4 (with typical Linyou regional folk style) were made in the Northern Song (960~1127) period. Those grottoes and cliff statues investigated provide precious material for the study of the development of Buddhist art from the early Tang to the Northern Song in Guanzhong surrounding the area of present-day Xi’an, the central region of the Tang Empire. |
