| Abstract | 『지광명장엄경』은 제불의 경계에 들어가는 지혜, 여래의 지혜 광명으로 장엄된 세계를 기술하는 대승경전이다. 여래의 현현을 ‘제석천의 영상’, ‘대법고의 소리’, ‘비・구름’, ‘대범천’, ‘태양의 광명’, ‘여의보주’, ‘메아리’, ‘대지’, ‘허공’ 등으로 설명하는 9가지 비유가 주목받는다. 그리고 이 비유들은 환영과도 같아서, “생겨나는 것도 아니고 사라지는 것도 아니다”라고 강조되는데, 바로 여기에 이 경전의 핵심이 놓여 있다.
이 점에서 『지광명장엄경』은 「여래성기품」과 명백한 차이를 갖는다. 여래의 현현이 일체 세간에 두루하다는 것을 기술하는 점에서 공통점이 있지만, 거기에는 여래의 불생불멸을 설명하는 부정구의 나열은 보이지 않는다. 『보성론』에서는 여래 현현에 관한 9가지 비유를 중생들 마음 안에 머무는 법신을 보는 것으로 해석하며, 여래장 사상에 맞추어 ‘연꽃 속의 여래’ 등과 같이 ‘중생의 마음에 생겨나는 것’으로 설명하고 있다. 이것은 여래의 현현을 바라보는 관점이 ‘제불의 세계’에서 ‘중생들 마음속’, 그들의 내부로 향하는 과정이라고 말할 수 있다.
『지광명장엄경』 기술방식의 특징은 “여래가 출현하든 출현하지 않든 어디에나 머무는 법성”을 언급하지만, 이것 역시 ‘불생불멸(不生不滅)・비유비무(非有非無)’의 관점에서 논의되고 있다는 점이다. 이것은 “여래가 출현하든 출현하지 않든 언제나 이들 중생은 여래장을 지니고 있다”고 말하는 『여래장경』・『보성론』의 입장과는 확연히 구분되는 지점이다. 『보성론』의 여래장 사상에 공성의 관점이 어떻게 남아 있는지는 보다 면밀한 검토가 요구되는 사항이지만, 『지광명장엄경』에서 여래의 현현을 불생불멸의 관점에서 설명하는 공성의 입장과 무관하지 않을 것이다.
The Sarvabuddhaviṣayāvatārajñānālokālaṃkāra is a Mahāyāna sūtra that describes the wisdom that enters the boundary of the buddha, and the light of the knowledge of the tathāgata. It is noted for its nine metaphors that explain the manifestations of the tathāgata. These metaphors are said to be like illusions and shadows (幻影), which “neither arise nor disappear.” These metaphors are the essence of this sūtra.
In this respect, the Sarvabuddhaviṣayāvatārajñānālokālaṃkāra has a distinct difference from Tathāgatagotrasambhava. Although both describe the manifestat -ions of the tathāgata as being everywhere pervasive, there are no negative phrases that explain the tathāgata, as “neither arising nor disappearing.” In the Ratnagotravibhga, we can see that the manifestation of the tathāgata is understood as seeing the dharmakāya that dwells in the minds of sentient beings, interpreting it as “having arisen in the minds of sentient beings” in accordance with the thoughts of the tathāgatagarbha. It could be said that it constituted the turning the point where the view of the manifestation of tathāgata shifts from the world of the Buddha towards the inner world of sentient beings.
In the Sarvabuddhaviṣayāvatārajñānālokālaṃkāra it is mentioned that the dharmakāya exists everywhere regardless of whether the tathāgata appears or not. However, this is also explained from the point of view of “neither arises nor disappears.” This is decisively different from the position of Tathāgatagarbhasūtra and Ratnagotravibhāga, in which it is mentioned that “whether the tathāgata appears or not, these sentient beings always have the tathāgatagarbha.” How the understanding of śūnyatā remains in Ratnagotravibhāga, establishing the thoughts of tathāgatagarbha is a matter to be examined more closely, but it could be said that it is not unrelated to the position of understanding śūnyatā in Sarvabuddha -viṣayāvatārajñānālokālaṃkāra, which views the manifestation of the tathāgata from the point of “neither arises nor disappears.” |
