| Abstract | 승조가 쓴 「물불천론」(物不遷論)은 짧은 글임에도 적지 않은 학승·학자들이 주석(注釋)을 달고 자신들의 견해를 밝혔다. 「물불천론」에 대한 학설은 대략 네 가지로 정리된다. 첫째는 대승 공종의 사상을 표명한 글로 보는 견해다. 당나라 원강(元康) 등이 대표적이다. 두 번째는 현학(玄學)으로 보는 입장이다. 현대 중국을 대표하는 학자들인 탕용통(湯用彤)과 펑유란(馮友蘭) 등이 주장했다. 세 번째는 궤변론(詭辯論)이라는 해석이다. 중국학자 런지위(任繼愈)와 팡리티엔(方立天) 등이 이런 견해를 밝혔다. 네 번째는 단멸론(斷滅論) 혹은 상견론(常見論)으로 파악하는 관점이다. 명나라 말기의 사문 진징(鎭澄)이 『물불천정량론』(物不遷正量論)에서 제기했다. 본고는 이러한 견해나 주장을 검토하고 「물불천론」이 과연 어떤 성격의 글인지를 조명했다. 「물불천론」의 단락을 구분하고 분석한 결과 다음과 같은 점을 확인했다. 승조는 비량(比量)의 방식으로 옛 사물과 지금 사물이 움직이지 않는다는 점을 논증했다. 상견[常想]과 무상[往]으로 움직이지 않음을 예증했다. 옛날[古]과 지금[今]으로 움직이지 않음을 증명했다. 원인[因]과 결과[果]로 움직이지 않음을 설명했다. 따라서 「물불천론」은 궁극적으로 ‘사물의 본성은 움직이지 않는 것’임을 주장한 성공론(性空論)이라고 파악했다. 「물불천론」은 현학도, 궤변론도, 단멸론도, 상견론도, 실재론도 아니라는 것이다.
Although it is a short work, many scholars have commented on the Wu Bu Qian Lun (物不遷論), which was written by Seng Zhao (僧肇). There are roughly four theories concerning the Wu Bu Qian Lun. The first considers the work to be an expression of the ideas of the Madhyamaka school, which is representative of the Tang Dynasty and the Yuan Kang (元康), among others. The second is seen from the perspective of the profound teachings (玄學). Tang Yong Tong (湯用彤) and Feng You Lan (馮友蘭), who were leading scholars in modern China, held such a position. The third theory regards the interpretation of sophistry (詭辯論). Chinese scholars Ren Ji Yu (任繼愈) and Pang Li Tien (方立天) expressed this view. Finally, the fourth theory seeks to identify and understand the theories of annihilationism (斷滅論) and eternalism (常見論). The monk Zhen Cheng (鎭澄) of the late Ming Dynasty covered this in the Wu Bu Qian Zheng Liang Lun (物不遷正量論). This paper reviews these opinions and arguments to shed light on the details of Wu Bu Qian Lun and determine its actual content.
The following was confirmed as a result of analyzing and classifying the Wu Bu Qian Lun. Seng Zhao argued by means of inferential reason (比量) that the ancient (昔物) and the current (今物) do not move. The inability to move according to the concept of permanence (常想) and everlasting change (往) was exemplified. It was proven that there is no moving in the past (古) nor the present (今). It was also explained that there is no moving by means of cause (因) and effect (果). Therefore, the Wu Bu Qian Lun is ultimately a theory of emptiness-in-nature (性空論) that insists that the nature of things do not move. The Wu Bu Qian Lun is not a teaching of the profound, nor of sophistry. It is not a theory of annihilation, nor of eternalism, nor is it a theory of substantial being (實在論). |
