| Abstract | 본 논문은 불설을 5가지 순서로 나누어 해석했던 5시교를 중심으로 시간적 순서로 가르침을 배열했던 남조의 여러 ‘판교(判敎)’들을 살펴보았다.
오늘날 ‘판교’는 중국불교의 여러 다양한 측면을 포괄한 하나의 고정된 개념으로서 받아들여지고 있지만, 오랜 시간 다양한 맥락과 목적에 의해 발생한 ‘판교’의 여러 층위들은 하나의 범주로 포함시키기에는 너무나 다양한 스펙트럼을 지닌다. 따라서 ‘판교’의 개념은 다시 검토할 필요가 있는데, 이를 위해서 ‘판교’라는 명칭으로 지칭되었던 각기 다른 사상 전통을 복원해서 스펙트럼의 다양한 빛깔들 간의 연속성과 불연속성을 밝히는 선행 작업이 요청된다. 본 논문에서는 그 일환으로, ‘판교’의 가장 오래된 형식 가운데 하나이면서 후대 동아시아불교의 ‘판교’에 결정적 영향을 주었던 남조 5시교 전통에 주목했다.
초기 동아시아불교의 ‘판교’ 전통은 후대 사상가들이 각자가 속한 종파의 소의경전을 높이기 위해서, 혹은 자신의 고유한 사상체계를 세우기 위한 목적으로 경전을 자리매김한 ‘판교’와 그 성격을 달리한다. 초기의 경전 분류는 대개 경전에 대한 해석과 함께 이루어졌는데, 경전 해석이 이루어지는 각기 다른 문맥에 따라 다양한 경전 해석이 출현했다.
남조의 5시교는 특히 『열반경』의 다섯 음식의 비유의 맥락 속에서 형성되었으며, 상당 부분 『열반경』 경문의 내용에 의해 자연스럽게 파생된 결과물이었다. 남조의 5시교 전통을 중심으로 이 시기 논사들이 펼친 ‘판교’는 자신의 사상을 체계화하는 특정한 방법론이나 자기가 속한 학파의 우월성을 합리화하기 위한 도구라기보다는, 여러 경전의 내용을 체계적으로 바라본 해석학적 틀에 가까웠다. 따라서 때로는 모순되어 보이는 경전을 분류하는 다양한 기준들이 하나의 해석 체계 속에 공존하는 것도 가능했다. 또한, 이 시기 경전에 대한 논사들의 관점은 불설에 대한 그들의 입장이나 자신의 사상 전체와 유기적인 관련성이 있다.
This paper investigates multiple teaching taxonomies (Panjiao, 判敎) of the Southern dynasties especially focusing on the chronological order of Buddhist teachings regarding the Five Teaching periods. Panjiao is a concept which has multi-layered meanings formed in various historical contexts. Therefore, this paper raises a question regarding Panjiao and whether or not, with its varied uses throughout Chinese Buddhism, it can be understood as a single concept. Multiple contexts and purposes of the term is too wide to be fit into a single category.
The classification of Buddhist teachings of early East Asian Buddhism was the natural result of interpreting Buddhist scriptures within a particular social and historical background. The scriptures as well as their interpretations were often enhanced to establish the unique ideology system of the time.
The teachings of the Five Periods of the southern dynasties were formed in the context of the Five Foods analogy, much of which was naturally derived from the Nirvāṇa Sūtra. The classification of Buddhist teachings during the Five periods was neither a specific methodology for systemizing the structure of their own doctrines nor a particular tool for consolidating the superiority of their own schools. It was rather a hermeneutic framework used in interpreting the contents of various Buddhist scriptures. Thus, criteria for classifying Buddhist scriptures could coexist compatibly, even if they seemed to contradict on occasion. The interpretation of the scriptures was not independent but organically connected to the interpreter's own perspectives.
