| Abstract | 본 논문에서는 일본불교학계에서 진행되어 온 원시불교와 초기불교의 명칭 논쟁을 고찰하며, 19세기 후반부터 지금까지 이어져 온 근원적 불교에 대한 일본학자들의 열정과 탐구를 살펴보았다.
오래된 불교를 가리키는 용어로 지금까지도 학계에서 흔히 사용되는 원시불교, 초기불교, 근본불교 등의 명칭은 모두 메이지(明治, 1868-1912) 시기에 일본학자에 의해 만들어진 것으로 추정되고 있다. 원시불교와 근본불교는 아네사키 마사하루(姉崎正治), 초기불교는 다카쿠스 쥰지로(高楠順次郞)에 의한 조어(造語)로 보인다. 다만, 각 명칭이 갖는 범위를 정의하는 시도는 다이쇼(大正, 1912-1926) 시기에 들어서의 일로, 기무라 타이켄(木村泰賢)·우이 하쿠쥬(宇井伯壽)·와츠지 데츠로(和辻哲郞) 등을 통해서이다. 대략 현존하는 경장과 율장을 중심으로 추출해 낼 수 있는 붓다 재세 당시부터 근본분열까지의 불교를 가리키는 말로 원시불교와 초기불교가 혼용되며, 근본불교는 이들 중 좀 더 오래된 불교를 일컫는다. 그런데 1986년에 사이구사 미츠요시(三枝充悳)가 원시불교라는 명칭이 갖는 문제점을 제기하며 이 호칭 대신 초기불교를 채택해야 한다는 주장을 펼친다. 이로 인해 일본불교학계에서는 원시불교·초기불교 명칭 논쟁이 발생하는데, 이 과정을 보면 19세기 후반부터 이어져 온 붓다의 원음 내지 불교의 근원에 대한 일본학자들의 열정이 ‘원시’라는 말에 담겨 있음을 새삼 확인할 수 있다. 한국불교학계에서는 원시라는 말에서 느껴지는 ‘미개’, ‘불완전’ 등의 의미가 기피되면서 근년에는 주로 초기불교라는 용어를 사용하고 있는 것 같다. 일본학계의 경우에도 최근에는 원시불교보다 초기불교라는 명칭을 사용하는 예가 많은데, 이는 역사적 사실로서의 고층(古層) 확정이 과연 가능한가 라는 근본적인 의문에 근거한, 말하자면 원시불교라는 명칭에는 불교의 근원이라는 가치 판단이 함축되어 있다는 점에서 부담을 느껴 보다 객관적인 표현이라고 생각되는 초기불교를 사용하는 것으로 보인다. 다만 초기불교라는 표현을 사용할 경우에는 초기·중기·후기를 규정할 수 있는 설득력 있는 근거가 필요해지기 때문에, 현재 이를 명확히 하려는 시도도 이루어지고 있다.
This essay examines the debate regarding the terms Primitive Buddhism and Early Buddhism as used in Japanese Buddhist academia. As a means of referring to traditional Buddhism, the terms Primitive Buddhism, Early Buddhism, and Fundamental Buddhism, all of which are still commonly used in academic circles, are estimated to have been established by Japanese scholars during the Meiji period (1868-1912). Primitive Buddhism and Fundamental Buddhism seem to have originated from Masaharu Anesaki (姉崎正治), while Early Buddhism comes from Junjiro Takakus (高楠順次郞). Based on what has been extracted from the existing Suttapiṭaka and Vinayapiṭaka, these terms refer to Buddhism beginning around the time of the Buddha until the Mahāsāṃghika-Sthavira schism.
In 1986, Mitsuyoshi Saigusa (三枝充悳) insisted that the term Primitive Buddhism be discarded and the term Early Buddhism be adopted. This led to a naming debate, which reconfirmed that the word ‘primitive’ contains the fervor that some Japanese scholars have for the Buddha’s one teaching (原音) and the roots of Buddhism, which have been passed down since the late 19th century. In the case of Korean Buddhism, it seems there are more instances of the term Early Buddhism than there are Primitive Buddhism. This seems to be done as a way to avoid the uncivilized or incomplete tone ‘primitive’ denotes. Recently, it has been the case that many Japanese scholars also prefer the term Early Buddhism to Primitive Buddhism. This may suggest that ‘early’ is thought to be a more objective expression while ‘primitive’ implies a value judgment at the root of Buddhism.
Furthermore, using the term Early Buddhism provides a persuasive basis for a case to define the early, middle, and late periods. Thus, this essay attempts to make such clarifications. |
