| Abstract | 본고의 내용은 『유가론기』(瑜伽論記)에 나타난 경사(景師)의 주석 인용 횟수를 전면 재검토하고, 경사의 공(空) 이해의 특징을 『유가사지론』의 악취공자(惡取空者)에 대한 그의 주석을 통해 살펴본 것이다. 우선 기존의 연구에서는 경사의 인용이 총 1,269회 나온다고 했지만, 본고의 조사 결과 46회가 더 발견되어 총 1,315회인 것으로 확인되었다. 다음으로 악취공자에 대한 경사의 주석은 『유가사지론』을 이해하는 데 도움을 준다. 『유가론에서는 이 세계를 ‘실무(實無)를 증익(增益)하거나 실유(實有)를 손감(損減)하는 과실이 없는 방식’으로 설명하고자한다. 여기서 말하는 실무와 실유가 무엇을 가리키는지를 명확히 보여주기 위해 중국의 『유가론』 주석가들은 ‘삼성설(三性說)’을 활용하는데, 경사 역시 마찬가지다. ‘공’과 ‘삼성’의 관계에 대한 경사의 견해는 크게 두 가지로 집약된다. 첫째 『유가론』에서 설한 ‘공’의 밀의(密意)는, 변계소집성의 경우 ‘그것 자체가 없다는 점’에서 ‘공’이지만, 나머지 두 자성은 ‘그 속에 변계소집성이 없다는 점’ 에서 ‘공’이라고 설한 것이다. 둘째, 있고 없음의 관점에서 보면, 변계소집성은 토끼뿔과 같아서 본래 없지만, 의타기성과 원성실성은 실제로 존재한다. 따라서 ‘있는 것은 있고 없는 것은 없다.’고 해야지, 모든 것을 없다고 부정해서는 안
된다. 이 둘째 주장과 관련하여 경사는 삼성의 존재를 모두 부정하는 ‘후대 삼론사(後代三論師)’의 견해를 비판함으로써 현장 이후 명확해진 삼성설의 정의를 분명히 드러내었다. 경사는 먼저 현실의 인과관계와 증입(證入)의 관점에서 의타기성과 원성실성이 존재함을 역설하였다. 다음으로 그는 구역 『선계경』(善戒經) 등에 이미 삼성의 유무에 대한 견해가 나와 있음에도 불구하고 현장이 이를 발
굴해내기 전까지 그 의미가 정확히 이해되지 못했음을 지적하였고, 구역 『섭론』 에서도 삼성의 존재를 전면 부정하고 있으므로, 옳지 않다고 보았다.
This study looks at the special features regarding the understanding of emptiness (空) according to Gyungsa (景師) through his annotations on wrong attachment to emptiness (惡取空) in the Yogâcārabhūmi śāstra (『瑜伽師地論』). Existing research shows that there are a total of 1,269 citations credited to Gyungsa however, as this manuscript shows, there are 46 more, bringing the total number of citations to 1,315. Gyungsa’s annotations regarding those who are attached to a destructive view of emptiness (惡取空者) are followed by an explanation of true existence (實有) and nonexistence(實無) based on the theory of three natures (三性論).
Gyungsa’s view on the relationship between emptiness (空) and the three natures (三性論) is twofold. Firstly, regarding the first nature or illusionary discrimination (parikalpita-svabhāva) the Yogâcārabhūmi explains emptiness as a hidden intention (密意). In this case emptiness is in itself empty.
However, regarding the second and third natures emptiness refers to the emptiness of parikalpita-svabhāva itself. Secondly, when seen from the viewpoint of existence and nonexistence, parikalpita-svabhāva is like a rabbit with horns (兎角): it can be imagined, but does not actually exist. In contrast, objects of knowledge regarding the second nature, paratantra-svabhāva (依他起性) and the third nature, pariniṣpanna-svabhāva (圓成實性) actually exist.
From this it follows that ‘The existents exist and the non-existents do not exist.’
In relation to the second view, by criticizing the view of the Three Treatise master (三論師), which negates the existence of the three natures, Gyungsa intends to provide a more clear and distinct theory that follows Xuan Zang (玄奘). |
