Abstract본고는 경전 안에서 중층적 층위를 보이고 있는 『대반열반경』(이하 『열반경』)의한역을 중심으로 불성론 전개와 관련이 있는 本有今無偈의 해석을 살펴본 것이다. 法顯譯 『열반경』「如來性品」에는 본유금무게가 없지만, 曇無讖譯 「여래성품」에는 이 게송이 나온다. 이것은 일체중생의 불성과 연관된 게송으로 후에 增廣된 『열반경』「梵⾏品」 가운데에서 자체적으로 이 게송에 대해 8가지로 해석을제시하고 있다. 나아가 「사자후보살품」에서는 이것을 다시 세 개의 범주로 정리하여 설명을 한 뒤에, 諸法 因緣⽣滅의 이치로 게송을 정리하고 있다. 이 게송을분석하는 과정에서 『열반경』을 제작한 사람들은 불성이라는 개념을 반야사상과연관된 맥락 속에서 이해하고자 했음을 확인할 수 있다. 나아가 유식학파의 세친이나 중관학파에서 자신들의 취의에 맞게 이 게송을 해석하는 것을 확인하였다.
세친은 妙有的인 열반의 이론적 측면을 드러내며 ‘本有今有 過於三世’로 이 게송의 의미를 해석하였다. 『대지도론』이나 『중론』과 같은 중관계 논서에서 이 게송은 ‘本無今無’의 畢竟空의 입장을 확인하게 하는 내용으로 해석된다. 菩提流 支는 『⾦剛仙論』에서 眞如를 불성이라고 하고, 모든 중생이 진여불성이 있지만 제불보살은 수행에 의해 미혹을 끊은 결과로 불성을 볼 수 있다고 하여 수행론적 입장이 강조된 해석을 하는 특징이 있다.

This article purports to examine the interpretations of the gāthā of “What originally was is now not” in relation with the development of the idea of the Buddha nature, with special reference to the Chinese translation of the Mahayana Mahaparinirvana Sutra(abridged below as “Nirvana Sutra”), which reveals diverse layers of meanings among Buddhist sutras. While there is no gāthā of “What originally was is now not” in Faxian’s Chinese translation of the Chapter entitled “On the Nature of Tathāgata” of the Nirvana Sutra, there appears this gāthā in Dharmakshema’s Chinese translation of it. In relation to the Buddha nature of every sentient being, this verse is interpreted through 8 ways independently in the later-expanded chapter entitled “On Holy Actions” of the Nirvana Sutra. Further, this verse is arranged and explained by three categories in the chapter entitled “On Bodhisattva Lion’s Roar” of the Nirvana Sutra. with its reinterpretation of the Buddha nature as signifying the reality of the middle path through causal conditions of all the dharmas. As is revealed through the analysis of this verse, the composers of the Nirvana Sutra are ascertained as having attempted to understand the notion of Buddha nature in the context of the idea of prajñāpāramitā. On its significance, Vasubandhu interpreted the meaning of this gāthā as signifying “What originally was is now, passing through the Three Times,” revealing the theoretical dimension of the Buddha nature in its mysterious existence. In the Madhyamaka Treatises such as the Commentary on the Great Perfection of Wisdom or the Fundamental Verses on the Middle Path, this verse is interpreted as affirming the position of the ultimate emptiness in “What originally was not is now not.” In his Treatise by Vajrarṣi, Bodhiruci understands Suchness as Buddha nature that is attained by all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas as the result of having severed misgivings through Buddhist practices, whose interpretation is unique in emphasizing the position of practitioners.
