| Abstract | 가상현실은 가상의 공간에서 현실과 유사한 체험을 할 수 있고, 증강현실은 현실과 가상현실의 중간으로 실제 현실 속에 가상의 이미지를 더한 것이 다. 불교문화재 중 경주 석굴암처럼 현존하는 문화재는 보존을 이유로 안에 들어가보거나 만질 수 없는것이 많다. 또한 익산 미륵사지 처럼 현재는그 터만 남아있을 뿐 원래의 목조건물들은 사라져버린 경우도 있다.
가상현실에서는 이용자들이 특정하게 마련된 체험관이나 극장에서 HMD 등의 기기를 사용하여 석굴암 안에 들어가 그 안을 돌거나 상들을 만지는 체험을 할 수 있다. 한편 증강현실은 현장에서 더욱 현실감 있게 체험하는 것이 목적이다. 익산 미륵사지에서는 정해진 지점에서 기기를 쓰고 서 있으면 이용자의 눈앞에 그곳에 있었던 건물이 나타난다. 가상현실과 증강현실을 포함한 디지털 문화유산의 발달은 문화재를 손상시키지 않고 보존과 복원에 이용할 수 있으며, 이용자들에게는 문화재의 감상과 이해를 높일 수 있다. 이 때문에 유네스코뿐만 아니라 많은 국가에서도 문화재들을 디지털화하는 프로젝트를 진행하고 있다.
본고에서는 세계 각국에서 가상/증강현실로 제작⋅시현되고 있는 불교문화재의 대표적인 예와 현재 국내에서 시현된 예들을 살펴보았다. 특히 박물관에서 특별전과 함께 상연된 가상/증강현실은 특별전 작품들의 이해를 돕기 위한 교육적인 효과가 높음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 국보로 지정된 극락전들, 경주 남산의 마애불 등 가상현실을 이용하면 문화재의 보존이 좋은 예들을 제시해 보았다.
VR (Virtual Reality) makes reality to experience in the virtual world and AR (Augmented Reality) makes imagery to experience in the real world. A lot of extant artifacts in Buddhist cultural properties as the statues in the Seokguram Temple are not to be watched directly or touched for the reason of preservation. Meanwhile, some Buddhist cultural properties are missing and just remains the site as Mireuksa Temple Site in Iksan city.
VR enables us to experience touching the statues and walking them around inside the Seokguram Temple in the experience center or theater equipped with the special devices as HMD and so on. Also, AR aims to allow us to experience feeling more reality. For example, it can show virtual buildings and statues and towers in Mireuksa Temple Site to visitors taking the devices and standing at the site. The temples appear in front of them. The development of the digital cultural properties by the utilization of VR and AR can be useful to preserve and restore real cultural properties without damaging them. Further, the visitors’s experience can be improved with more understanding in appreciating the cultural properties. Not only UNESCO but also most countries are, currently, engaging in the projects of digitalizing cultural properties.
This paper surveys some of represented examples of VR/AR projects for Buddhist cultural properties currently being exhibited in some countries of the world. Especially, some VR/AR projects in the special exhibitions of museums have been regarded as having high educational effects in visitors’ appreciating the works of art. This paper also surveys some VR/AR examples for Geungnak-Jeons designated as national treasures, a Buddha image on a cliff on the Kyeungju Namsan mountain and so on. |
