| Abstract | 이 글에서는 콘즈와 슈미트하우젠의 학문세계의 일부분을 소개하고 그 내용을 통해서 이 둘의 연구방법에 대해서 검토하고자 한다. 2장에서는 콘즈의 『불교: 그 핵심과 발전』(『한글세대를 위한 불교』로 번역됨)의 2장과 3장의 일부 내용을 살펴본다. 이 책의 2장 ‘승가불교’에서는 승가생활의 핵심적 덕목으로 청빈, 독신, 불살생을 거론하고, 아울러 각각의 항목에서 그 주제와 어긋나는 여러 사례를 시대와 나라를 넘나들면서 제시하고 있다. 그리고 이 책의 3장 ‘대중의 불교’의 일부내용에서는 세속의 군주가 불교를 보호한 이유에 대해 검토한다. 그 가운데에서 콘즈는 역시 시대와 나라를 넘나들면서 여러 사례를 제시하고 있다. 여기서 콘즈의 거시적 안목을 읽을 수 있다. 그렇지만, 콘즈가 한국불교에 대해 언급한 내용에 틀린 부분이 있다. 3장에서는 슈미트하우젠의 주저 『알라야식』에 소개된 연구방법을 선행연구를 통해 알아보고, 그의 두 편의 논문을 검토한다. 『알라야식』에서는 문헌학의 연구 성과에 근거를 두고 개념의 차이에 주목하고, 그 개념의 변화과정을 섬세하게 검토하고 있다. 이것을 선행연구에서는 ‘용어법의 분석에 의한 사상사적 해명’이라고 말하고 있다. 그의 논문 「불교적 전통에서 본 자연의 가치」에서는 개념의 차이에 주목해서 논의를 펼쳐가고 있고, 「불살생의 기원에 대한 고찰」에서는 개념의 변화과정을 섬세하게 검토하고 있다. 필자는 「불교적 전통에서 본 자연의 가치」의 주장 속에 보편타당하지 않은 논법이 있다고 주장하고자 하며, 또 「불살생의 기원에 대한 고찰」의 내용도 개설서에 실릴 만큼 탄탄한 논증은 아니라고 주장한다. 그렇지만, 이 두 논문에서 발휘된 그의 섬세한 분석은 높이 평가해야 할 것이라고 생각한다. 그러면 이 두 사람의 연구방법이 한국불교학계에 시사하는 점은 무엇인가? 콘즈의 거시적 안목을 수용하고, 동시에 슈미트하우젠의 섬세한 분석도 겸비할 필요가 있다고 생각한다. 이 둘을 겸비하는 것이 학자의 이상적 모습일 것이라고 생각한다.
In this paper, I will introduce one aspect of scholarly work of Edward Conze and Lambert Schmithausen and examine their methods of research.
In Chapter 2 I study Buddhism: Its Essence and Development of Chapter 2 and Chapter 3. In Chapter 2 of Conze’s book, the chapter on monastic Buddhism, he says that poverty, celibacy and inoffensiveness are the essentials of monastic life, and he also presents many examples to be contrary to each subject through many periods and countries. In Chapter 3 on popular Buddhism, Conze explains why kings protected Buddhism, and he presents many examples from many eras and countries. In this point of his presenting many examples, we can see all inclusive eye of Conze. But he is mistaken in what he says about Korean Buddhism. In Chapter 3 of this paper, I studied the research methods of Schmithausen used in writing Ālayavijñāna through the previous research of other person, and I studied two of his papers. In Ālayavijñāna, Schmithausen keeps an eye on the difference of conception on the basis of the research product of philology, and he studies the change of conception delicately.
This is called the explanation of thought history by analyzing terminology in the previous research. Schmithausen keeps an eye on the difference of conception in his paper, “The Value of Nature in Buddhism Tradition”.
And in “A Study on the Origin of Asiṃsā”, he studies the change of conception delicately. I would like to say that there is the reasoning not to be universal valid in “The Value of Nature in Buddhism Tradition”.
And I will say that the content of “A Study on the Origin of Asiṃsā” is not strong demonstration enough to be recorded the outline book. But I think that we can appreciate Schmithausen’s delicate analysis in two papers high. Then what do the research methods of Conze and Schmithausen suggest in Korean buddhist academic world? We can accept Conze’s all-inclusive eye and Schmithausen’s delicate analysis. I think that to have both all-inclusive eye and delicate analysis is the ideal scholar.
