| Abstract | 한국불교사에서 화엄이 차지하는 위상은 매우 중요하다. 이런 점에서 의상 이전에 入唐한 인물인 자장과 화엄의 관계가 주목되는 것은 당연하다. 자장에 대한 국내 전승 자료에는, 화엄과 관련된 五臺山 文殊信仰의 모습이 강하게 드러나 있다. 그러나 가장 중요한 1차 자료인 중국 道宣의 「慈藏傳」에는 자장의 五臺山行이 전혀 기록되어 있지 않다. 이로 인하여 자장과 화엄의 관계는新羅下代의 華嚴家들이 윤색한 것이라는 주장이 제기되기도 하였다.
본고는 자장의 전기 자료에 대한 치밀한 史料 분석과 새롭게 발견된 신 자료를 토대로, 자장과 화엄의 관계를 검토한 것이다.
이를 통해서 먼저 자장이 입당하기 이전에, 이미 중국오대산의 불교문화가 신라의 河曲縣에까지 들어와 있었다는 점, 그리고 자장 이전에 중국오대산이 문수보살의 성지이자, 異蹟의 靈場으로써 확고한 자리매김을 하고 있었다는 점을 분명히 하였다.
또 도선의 佛蹟巡禮와 오대산에 대한 기록의 영향으로, 자장이 불적순례를 떠나게 되고 그 과정에서 오대산행이 이루어졌다는 점을 밝혀 보았다. 특히 새롭게 발견된 閔漬의 「開創祖師傳記」를 통해서, 자장의 오대산행이 642년에 이루어진 것이라는 점. 또 자장이 오대산의 東臺를 먼저 갔다는 것을 알게 되었다. 이 중 동대의 등장은, 敦煌文書인 「五臺山讚」과 연결고리가 확보된다는 점에서 시사하는 바가 적지 않다.
이상의 연구 접근을 통해서, 자장의 오대산행에 대한 보다 분명한 판단이 가능하게 된다. 이는 자장이 화엄과 관련된 인물임을 변증하는 것인 동시에, 신라하대의 화엄가들이 자장을 끌어들이게 되는 실질적인 이유라고 하겠다.
The status of Hwaeom in the history of Korean Buddhism is very important. Because of this, we must pay attention to the relationship between Hwaeom and Jajang, who had traveled to Tang (唐) China. In the written texts passed down in Korea, the appearance of belief in Manjusri began at Wutaishan and is tied to the Hwaeom School.
However, in 「Jajangjeon (慈藏傳)」, one of the most important texts of Chinese Daoxuan (道宣), there is no mention of Jajang traveling to Wutaishan (五臺山行). For this reason, arguments were sometimes made that the relationship between Jajang and Hwaeom had been embellished by the Hwaeom School (華嚴家).
This paper reviewed the relationship between Jajang and Hwaeom based on a thorough analysis of historical biographical materials about Jajang and on newly-found data. Through this, it was clear that the Buddhist culture of Wutaishan had already come far to Hagokhyun (河曲 縣) in Silla prior to Jajang’s traveling to Tang China. Furthermore, Wutaishan was already considered the “holy land” of Manjusri and a spritual field with different trace before Jajang. In addition, I found that, influenced by records about holy Buddhist sites and Wutaishan, Jajang made a pilgrimage to these sites and to Wutaishan. In particular, through a newly-found Founder Buddhist Monk Biography (「開創祖師傳記」) by Minji (閔漬), I found that Jajang left for Wutaishan in 642 and first visited 慈藏과 華嚴의 관련성 고찰 / 염중섭(자현) 289 Wutaishan’s Dongtai (東臺, Eastern Terrace). The reference to Dongtai is very suggestive in view of making a connection with Praise on Wutaishan (「五臺山讚」), which is a Dunhuang Document (敦煌文書). The research approach I used enables us to make a clearer judgment about Jajang’s trip to Wutaishan. This demonstrates that Jajang is connected to Hwaeom, and at the same time, this could be the real reason Jajang was attracted to the Hwaeom School.
