| Abstract | 구마라집의 역경이후 위진남북조시기에 『성실론』은 중국에서 매우 유행한 논서였다. 많은 주석서가 지어졌다고 기록되어 있지만, 최근에 돈황본 단편이 발견되는 것을 제외하고는 온전하게 전하는 것이 거의 없는 상황이다. 따라서 지금까지의 연구는 주로 천태와 삼론의 문헌 속에 남겨진 대표적인 성실사들의 이해를 통해서 연구되었다. 그런데 安澄(763~814)의 『中論疏記』는 오늘날 전하지 않는 성실사들의 逸文을 많이 보존하고 있어서 새로운 연구방법을 제공한다.
본 논문은 이 가운데 聰法師 『成實論章』 일문에 나타난 성실사의 견해를 고찰해본 것이다. 총법사라는 인물은 현존하는 자료들을 통해서는 정확한 생몰시기와 저술, 사상적 특징을 확인할 수 없다. 그동안 연구된 적이 없었던 남겨진 문장의 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 총법사는 『성실론』의 大乘義나 四 諦說을 『승만경』 등 대승경전의 經證을 들어서 설명하는 특징이 있음을 알 수 있었다. 총법사의 문장은 성실대승의를 밝히는 곳에 대한 구체적인 인용을 제공하고 있다. 이것은 당시의 성실사들이 『성실론』을 대승이라고 여기고, 그렇게 설명하려고 노력했던 방식을 보여준다. 그러나 총법사의 이러한 설명은 『성실론』 자체의 일반적인 사제설을 고려하지 않은 편중된 이해방식이라고 지적할 수 있으며, 후대에 삼론가에게 소승이라고 평가를 받게 되는데 근거를 제시하는 일면이라고 논자는 생각한다.
한편 人法二空과 二諦에 대한 다른 문헌에서 발견되지 않는 총법사의 독창적인 주석 속에서 이후 중국불교사상에 수용되고 변형되었을 자취가 발견되기도 하여 흥미를 이끈다. 대표적인 예로 방광(론자)에 대한 견해를 들 수 있다. 이들은 길장이 적극적으로 배척하는 대표적인 한 부류에 들어가며, 공을 제대로 이해하지 못하여 二諦의 뜻을 상실한 사람들을 지칭한다. 총법사의 해석은 삼론가에게도 그대로 수용되었을 가능성을 남겨둔다. 또한 『중관론소』 에서 성실사들이 四諦平等에 대한 견해가 있었다는 것을 밝혔는데, 그에 관련된 성실사의 입장을 직접 확인할 수 있었다.
본 논문을 통해서 일문연구가 향후 성실학 관련 연구영역을 확장시킬 수 있음이 잘 드러났다고 생각한다. 앞으로 총법사와 같은 성실사 발굴 영역이 확대되고, 남북조시기 성실학자의 연구에 관한 새로운 방향성을 제시하는데 『중론소기』에 인용된 『성실론』 주석서 逸文의 사상적 고찰 / 최은영 411 시금석이 되기를 기대한다.
My paper focused exclusively on the explanations of a Chengshi (成實) master named Master Cong and his Commentary on the Chengshilun (成實論疏), which contained the largest number of anecdotes. No accurate evidence exists to confirm the years he was born and died, nor his works or theories. I couldn’t find the records about him by the historical biography. But through a careful survey of quotations in Commentary on the Chengshilun, I determined that Master Cong was one of those who made extra effort to prove that the Chengshilun is a Mahāyāna text. It is remarkable that Master Cong used Śrīmālāsiṃhanāda sūtra and Mahāparinirvāṇa sūtra as his canonical proof to demonstrate that the Chengshilun is tied to Mahāyāna. Nevertheless, it is inevitable that Chengshilun never took the Mahāyānic notion of the Four Noble Truths into account. That might be one of the main reasons that Chengshilun was denigrated as a Hīnayānan text later on, despite all the efforts of Master Cong and his colleagues. Meanwhile, Master Cong’s creative annotations on the two different concepts of “Two Kinds of Sunyata” and the “Twofold truth,” which are not found in other texts, influenced later studies on Tiantai and Chinese Buddhism. Based on my research the categories of research documents on Sanlun studies and Chengshi studies were expanded, and new approaches to Satyasiddhiśāstra and research on the perspectives of Chengshi scholars were proposed. In the future, I anticipate expanded research into such subjects as Master Cong and the Chenshi masters. |
