AbstractThis paper examines in two stages the characteristics of faith in Amitabha’s Pure Land as presented in the Hyeonhaeng seobang gyeong (現行西方經). I attempted to determine the characteristics of practicing faith in Amitabha’s Pure Land, as evidenced in recitation of the mantra, Amitabul Bonsim Mimyo Jin-eon (阿彌陀佛本心微妙眞言), and in respect to methods of divination. In the course of my investigation it became evident that the characteristic of faith in Amitabha’s Pure Land practice, which was conducted with the divination method, is that while it accepts the view that faith in Amitabha’s Pure Land depends on an external being or power, and that this practice had been popular with previous such communities, the Hyeonhaeng seobang gyeong also stressed the importance of gaining confidence in the power of one’s own self by chanting the Amitabul Bonsim Mimyo Jin-eon mantra. The traditional view of faith in Amitabha’s Pure Land was entirely dependent on an external being or power for rebirth in Amitabha’s Pure Land because it was only considered possible for people of spiritually inferior capacities to achieve rebirth in the Pure Land through the power of Amitabha’s vow. By offering an alternative practice based on self-power, the Hyeonhaeng seobang gyeong promised the possibility of being reborn in Amitabha’s Pure Land immediately through chanting Amitabul Bonsim Mimyo Jin-eon 10,000 times, without needing to die first. Finally, it is interesting to note in the Hyeonhaeng seobang gyeong an equality of mind that has compassion for all people, regardless of spiritual capability, in the belief that all can attain Buddhahood by practicing faith in Amitabha’s Pure Land, according to each one’s capacity.

이 논문은 13세기에 한반도에 찬술된 위경 『현행서방경』에 나타나는 정토신앙의 특징을 고찰하는 것을 목표로 하였다. 이 경전의 정토신앙의 특징을 밝히기 위하여 두 가지 접근을 하였는데, 첫째는 문헌학적 접근을 통해 『현행서방경』의 저자와 저술의도와 구성을 고찰하였고, 둘째는 문헌학적 고찰에 입각하여 정토신앙의 특징을 고찰하였다. 그 결과 문헌학적 고찰에서 밝혀진 점은세 가지로, 첫째는 이 경전은 阿彌陀佛本心微妙眞言과 潙仰宗의 영향을 받은 점찰법을 실행하는 신앙결사의 가이드북으로 찬술되었다는 점, 둘째는 이 경전의 찬술 배경에는 12세기 고려시대를 대표하는 지눌의 정혜결사와 관련이 있다는 점, 셋째는 이 경전의 편찬에 지대한 영향을 끼친 낙서가 중국불교의 법안종 영명연수의 정혜쌍수와 교선일치 사상의 영향을 받은 인물이라는 점을 밝혔다. 이러한 문헌학적 고찰에서 『현행서방경』과 선종의 관계를 바탕으로세 가지 정토신앙의 특징을 밝혔다. 첫째는 아미타불의 본원력에 의한 타력정토왕생을 인정하지만, 진언염송에 의한 자력왕생을 강조한다는 점, 둘째는 사후왕생을 인정하지만, 현세에서의 즉득왕생과 유심정토를 성취하는 것을 목표로 한다는 점, 셋째는 정토왕생을 위한 수행방법이 하근기를 위한 방편이 아니라 상중하근기 모두를 위한 수행법이라는 것을 강조한다는 점이다.
