| Abstract | 범천권청이란 인도고대로부터 내려오는 많은 신들 가운데 가장 높은 지위에 있던 범천이 성도직후 붓다에게 설법해주기를 권청한 것을 말한다. 이것이 佛典에 어떠한 형태로 나타나는가를 통해 범천권청의 유형과 기본구조를 살펴보고, 나아가 범천권청의 의의를 밝혔다. 범천권청은 붓다가 깨달은 법을 설하는 중요한 계기가 된 사건인 만큼 ‘왜 범천인가’를 우선 밝혔다. 인도서사시에서 보이는 범천권고의 형태를 통해서 불교경전에 등장하는 신화적인 요소에 대한 올바른 이해를 꾀하였다. 인도의 일반인들이 최고의 신인 범천을 기꺼이 받아들이거나, 범천에게 격려받는다는 題材를 신흥종교인 불교가 수용한 것이 범천권청이라고 할 수 있다.
범천권청에서 ‘권청’의 의미는 붓다가 깨달은 법에 대한 존엄성의 표현으로 이해할 수 있다. 즉 범천의 의미와 권청의 의미는 서로 교차하면서 붓다가 깨달은 법의 존엄을 표현한 동시에 대중을 교화⋅전도하는 방법으로 기성종교의 권위를 이용하여 붓다의 가르침을 최고의 자리에 올려놓은 것이다.
This study is about the episode of Brahmā’s entreaty to the Buddha to teach. I tried to make clear the meaning of the episode of Brahmā’s entreaty to the Buddha to teach, through look for the form of the Brahmā’s entreaty in the Buddhist literature.
It is not easy to know about when and how did this episode of Brahmā’s entreaty to the Buddha to teach come in the Buddhist literature.
But it could find that the motif of Brahmā as the best God who has encouraged people has been existed in the ancient Indian epic. We can see the form of the Brahmā’s advisory in the epic of ancient India. The purpose of the episode was to show that Brahmā, the representative of established religion, was a follower of the Buddha. It was a religious propaganda.
And I think the meaning of the ‘Entreaty’ is the method that represents the respect of the Dharma, the Buddha had discovered. It is the key point that the story of Brahmā’s entreaty put the sermon of Buddha to the level of the best.
