| Abstract | 본고는 敦煌 莫高窟의 29개 窟內에 그려져 있는 華嚴經變相圖의 유통과 구도 및 내용 등을 살펴 본 것이다. 막고굴의 화엄경변상도는 唐代(15굴)에 성행하였고, 五代(8굴)를 거쳐 宋代(6굴)에 이르기까지 그려졌다. 그리고 화엄경변상도는 주로 굴의 북벽(18굴)과 천정(7굴)에 그려졌으며, 남벽(1굴)과 前室(3굴)에 그려지기도 하였다.
이러한 29개굴의 변상도는 모두 80권 『화엄경』(695-699번역) 七處九會의 변상도이다. 60권 『화엄경』(418-420번역)의 변상도는 전혀 보이지 않는다. 그것은 돈황 천불동에 화엄경변상도와 아울러 經變이 그려지던 唐대에 80권 『화엄경』이 크게 유통되었기 때문인 것으로 보인다.
막고굴의 화엄경변상도는 세부적으로는 비록 다양한 변화가 보이나 전체적으로는 7처9회도와 善財求法圖로 되어 있다. 7처9회의 배열은 굴에 따라 다르지만 제1회는 언제나 하단의 중앙에 자리하고 있다. 9회의 자리를 알 수 있게 하는 도상의 문자 중에 아직 판독되지 못한 글자를 많이 밝혀봄으로써 9회의 해당처소를 재확인하였다. 그리고 비록 9회의 배열과 문자의 분량은 달라도 경문에서 서술한 회처의 세계를 어떻게 이해하여 변상도로 나타내려 했는지 그 요점을 파악하게 되었다.
善財求法圖 또한 다양하게 펼쳐져 있다. 7처9회도 內에 선재구법의 여정이 함께 그려져 있기도 하고 따로 그려져 있기도 하다. 그리고 선재와 선지식의 만남이 비교적 단순하게 묘사되어 있기는 하나, 각 선지식의 특징과 아울러 선재가 주인공임을 분명히 드러내고 있음이 돋보인다.
이러한 화엄경변상도는 宋代 이후 중국 뿐만 아니라 한국과 일본 등에 미친 영향도 적지 않다고 하겠다. 특히 조선후기의 7처9회도인 華嚴經變相圖 탱화는 독특한 형태를 보이고는 있으나, 그 始原은 막고굴의 화엄경변상도의 영향을 간과할 수 없다고 하겠다.
This paper examines popularity, composition and contents of the illustrated Avataṃsakasūtra paintings in the twenty nine caves among the Magao caves, Dunhuang. The Avataṃsakasūtra paintings in the Magao caves had been prospered in Tang(唐) dynasty(15 caves) and been still painted in the Five dynasties(五代)(8 caves) and until the Song dynasty(6 caves). Most of these paintings are located on the north wall(18 caves) and the cave ceiling(7 caves) but sometimes shown on the south wall(1 cave) and the anteroom(2 caves).
These paintings in the twenty nine caves are all based on the 80-volume Avataṃsakasūtra(tr. 695-699) and there is no painting based on the 60-volume Avataṃsakasūtra(tr. 418-420). This seems to be because the 80-volume Avataṃsakasūtra were prosperous in Tang dynasty when many illustrated sūtras paintings including Avataṃsakasūtra paintings being drawn in Dunhuang. Considering that the date when the first Avataṃsakasūtra painting(Cave No. 44) was drawn is during High Tang(盛唐), it is possible that the “Illustration of the 7 locations” drawn by Fa-tsang(法藏) in 708 had an influence on these Avataṃsakasūtra paintings.
Although the Avataṃsakasūtra paintings in the Magao caves reveal various changes in terms of detail, they are comprised of mainly the “Illustration of the 7 locations and 9 assemblies” and the "“Illustrations of Sudhana's pilgrimage for the dharma teacher.” The arrangements of the 7 locations 9 assemblies in the paintings are diverse in various caves. The “Illustrations of Sudhana's pilgrimage for the dharma teacher” are also shown within the “Illustrations of the 7 locations and 9 assemblies” or it is separately drawn or sometimes it is not shown.
It can be said that these Avataṃsakasūtra paintings had considerable influence on China after Song dynasty, Korea and Japan. Specifically, the Avataṃsakasūtra portraits of Buddha for altar in the later Chosun dynasty, Korea show creative variations on the “Illustrations of the 7 locations and 9 assemblies.” They are, however, originated from the Avataṃsakasūtra paintings in the Magao caves, Dunhuang. |
