Abstract令知会は1884（明治17）年、浄土真宗本願寺派の僧・島地黙雷らが中心となって結成された仏教結社である。島地はキリスト教の進出に強い対抗意識を持ちながらも、同時に当時の仏教界全体が明治維新後の「文明開化」に遅れを取ってきた現状に危機感を持ち、宗派を超え仏教を文明社会に適合させる改革に熱心に取り組んだ。本書はその令知会の機関誌『令知会雑誌』を研究の対象とし、知られざる明治初期・中期の仏教界の様子を探る解題論文集である。
