| Abstract | 慈藏과 관련된 중국자료와 한국자료 사이에는 여러 가지의 異見이 존재한다. 이러한 이견은 크게 자장의 ‘入唐목적과 年代’, 그리고 신라 귀국후 ‘溟州지역에 갔느냐’와 ‘그 시기가 언제냐’에 관한 것이다. 이와 같은 문제들에 대한 해법을 제시하기 위해, 본고에서는 기존의 자료들을 보다 세밀하게 고찰하고, 閔漬의 『五臺山事蹟記』를 이용해서 보충하는 방식을 취했다.
이를 통해서, 먼저 入唐목적에 관해서는 자장이 使臣과 동행하고 海路로 갔다는 점 등을 근거로 唐의 수도인 長安으로 먼저 간 것으로 판단했다. 그리고 당나라 시기의 마지막에 여러 佛敎聖跡들을 순례할 때, 중국 오대산을 참배한 것으로 확정하였다. 또 자장의 入唐연도인 636년 설과 638년 설의 두 가지 중 638년 설이 맞으며, 이 같은 왜곡은 ‘후대 한국오대산 불교의 성세’와 ‘중국과 고려의 대외관계 변화’에 의해서 발생한 것으로 결론지었다.
다음으로 자장이 신라로 귀국해서 溟州지역을 방문했느냐에 대해서는, 그 결과로 오대산과 水多寺ㆍ淨岩寺 등의 유적이 존재하므로 사실로 판단했다. 다만 그 시기는 자장과 관련된 기록이 전하는 ‘귀국직후’와 ‘晩年’에 의한 두 번이 아니라, 만년으로 단일화했다. 그리고 이유를 聖骨에서 眞骨로 권력이 변모하는 과정에서 밀려났기 때문으로 판단했다.
끝으로 자장에게서 시원을 두는 한국오대산 中臺 寂滅寶宮은, 頂骨과 佛腦를 모셨다는 점에서 최고의 보궁이라는 인식이 존재한다는 것. 그리고 여타의 보궁들과는 달리 천연적인 明堂地勢를 이용한 방식을 취하고 있어 특이한 양상을 나타내고 있다는 점이 부각된다. 본고에서는 이에 대한 보다 타당한 해법을 제시해 보았다.
There are several different opinions between Korean and Chinese materials on Jajang. The difference is mainly about ‘for what and when Jajang entered China’ and ‘whether he really went to Myeongju(溟州)’ after he came back to Silla and ‘when, if he did.’ To solve these problems, this paper examines the existing materials more in detail and the study is complemented with written by Minji(閔漬).
Through this, it turned out that Jajang went first to Changan(長安) the capital of Tang Dynasty by ship along with an envoy. While he made a pilgrimage to Buddhist sacred places in the last stage of Tang traveling, he must have visited Odaesan in China. And the year when Jajang entered Tang has been insisted to be either 636 or 638, between which the latter is right. This kind of distortion seems to have been caused by ‘the later prosperity of Korean Odaesan Buddhism’ and ‘the change of international relation between China and Koryeo.’
Next, in the problem whether Jajang really went to Myeongju(溟州) after he came back to Silla, it seems true because there exist the historic sites such as Odaesan, Sudasa(水多寺) and Jeongamsa(淨岩寺). But, in the problem of time when Jajang visited there, it was determined as one time of his later days rather than two times of ‘right after his returning’ and ‘his later days.’ It’s because he was thought to have been pushed out in the process that the power was shifted from the seonggol(聖骨) to the jingol(眞骨).
Finally, Jeogmyeolbogung(寂滅寶宮) of Jungdae(中臺) in Korean Odaesan which was originated by Jajang is peculiar in that it has been considered as the highest bogung enshrining Buddha’s brain and head bone and that it is sited at the natural super fine landscape unlike other bogungs. In this paper, more reasonable solutions for this have been suggested. |
