| Abstract | 虛應堂 普雨(1507?-1565)가 생존 시대는 崇儒抑佛의 불교교단으로서는 가장 어려운 시기였다. 그는 일반적으로 妖僧으로 평가 되고 있지만, 불교사에서는 불교를 위해 목숨을 받친 殉敎者이다.
그의 수행과 교화방편은 일방적인 간화선에만 치우치지 않고 禪敎一致, 禪淨雙修, 儒佛仙 三敎가 다르지 않음을 설하고 있다. 그러나 본 논문에서는 그의 정토관에 대하여 중점적으로 살펴보았다.
그의 염불수행은 첫째 念佛禪은 禪淨雙修的인 수행방법을 선택하였고, 타인에게도 권장하였다. 둘째는 見佛과 化佛에 관한 견해이다. 마음의 눈을 뜨면 부처님은 오지 않으면서도 오고 가지 않으면서도 간다고 하여 진여의 자유자재를 말하고 있다. 즉 염불삼매와 견불삼매가 둘이 아님을 말한다. 셋째는 極樂往生發願이다. 그는 각 종 疏에서 극락왕생발원을 간절히 하고 있다. 따라서 唯心淨土만을 주창한 것이 아니라 칭명염불과 指方立相的인 서방정토를 확신하고 있다. 넷째는 祈願文이다. 그는 왕실과 문정왕후의 번창과 건강을 위하여 많은 곳을 다니면서 기도발원하였다. 현세적인 그의 기도는 왕실을 위해서는 天壇에서 행하였으며, 일반적인 기도는 佛前에서 행하였다. 그리고 그 후원은 문정왕후가 內需司를 통하여 하였다. 崇儒抑佛政治 하에서 불교중흥을 위하여 그의 기도는 간절하였다. 그는 자력수행을 하는 禪師임에도 불구하고 타력신앙에 간절하였던 것은 그에게는 자력과 타력에 대한 구분보다 부처님의 가피력을 믿고 의지하였다고 보여진다. 다섯째는 淨土信仰의 홍포를 적극적으로 하였다. 그가 일반대중들이나 서민들 및 아녀자들을 위하여 이야형태의 『勸念要錄』을 편찬하였다. 이 왕생담은 국내의 것과 중국의 것을 모아서 편찬하였다. 그러면서 이를 문정왕후와 한문을 모르는 서민들에게 널리 유포하기 위해 언해본도 편찬하였다. 이를 볼때 그는 정토신앙홍포에 적극적이었음을 알 수 있다.
The age when Zen Master Huwoodang Bowoo(1507?-1565) lived was the hardest time for Korean Buddhism under oppression. He is generally considered as a weird monk, but he was actually the martyr who sacrificed himself for Buddhism in the Buddhist history.
His Seon thoughts was not inclined to Kwanhwa Seon(Zen); He declared that the Seon and Pure land are the same, that meditation and wisdom should be equally practiced, and that the three teachings of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism are not separate. The paper focused on his thoughts of Pure land.
His method of The Buddha-Contemplation Seon was first, practicing both meditation and wisdom, recommending it to others. Second, his view on seeing the buddha and manifesting buddha: When one opens one’s mind eye, buddha would come without coming, and go without going. It means the freedom of true nature. Third, He emphasized being born in the Pure land. He taught not only the mind-centered pure land, but also pure land by Buddha-Contemplation Buddhas’names. Fourth, the Master wrote a prayer paper. He had been to many places to pray for the prosperity of the king’s family and Queen Munjung(文定王后). His secular prayer was done in the heaven altar, while his buddhist prayer was done in the dharma hall. Queen Munjung supported all this process. Even though Master himself was a Seon practitioner using his own mind power, he was so dedicated himself to reconstruction of Korean Buddhism that he asked for Buddhas’s grace and power. Fifth, he actively disseminated the Chanting Buddha Seon. He edited 『Kwanyumyeorok勸念要錄』, for the lay people and women. At the same time, wanting to widely spread it, he translated it into Korean for Queen Munjung and those who were illiterate. He was very positive of disseminating the thought of Pure land. |
