Abstract일반적으로 世親은 經量部의 사유에 기초하여『구사론』을 저술하였기 때문에 이 부파 소속으로 알려지지만, 衆賢은 전혀 새로운 사실을 제공한다.
즉 당시 경량부는 譬喩者인 上座 슈리라타(Śrīlāta) 일파이며, 세친은 ‘外方의 경량부’라는 것이다. 본고에서는 중현의 암시적인 증언을 통해 양자의관계에 대해 논의하였다.
『순정리론』에서 세친은 경량부(혹은 비유자)로 일컬어지기도 하지만, 애당초 外方 즉 西方의 간다라논사 계통이었다. 이들은 카슈미르 毘婆沙師와대립한 유부 내부의 異說者였다. 이에 반해 상좌 슈리라타 일파는 유부와는다른 학파(他宗)인 譬喩者를 계승한 이들로서 東方(아유타국)이 그들의 주요거점이었다. 즉『대비바사론』 상에서 간다라논사와 비유자는 계통과 위상이 다른데, 이들을 계승한 세친(혹은 선대궤범사)과 슈리라타의 경량부도역시 그러하였을 것이다.
그러나 세친은 상좌 일파와 가까이하고 그들의 사유에 기초하여『구사론』을 저술하였다. 따라서『구사론』 상의 경량부는 거의 대개 상좌 일파를 가리키지만, 자신이 적극 동조한 간다라논사의 학설도 경량부(즉 外方의 경량부) 설로 전하기도 하였다. 이에 따라 세친 역시 더 이상 ‘간다라 계통의 유부논사’가 아닌 ‘경량부(혹은 비유자)와 가까이 한 이’로 인식되었으며, 이후『구사론』의 주석가들은 그를 경량부 논사로 이해하기도 하였다.
그렇지만 그와 동시대를 산 중현은 세친을 유부 毘婆沙를 등지고서 상좌일파에 동조한 同見者 정도로 이해하여 그들과 가까이하지 말 것을 누누이당부하고 있다. 이는 그의 소속이 원래 유부(간다라 계통)였기 때문이었을것이다.

In general, Vasubandhu was known as belonging to Sautrāntika because he wrote Abhidharmakoṣabhāṣya based on the thinking of the this sect, but Saṃghabhadra provided a totally new fact. Namely,Sautrāntika at that time was a sect of Sthavira Śrīlāta that was Dārṣṭāntika, and Vasubandhu was ‘foreign Sautrāntika’. This thesis argued the following facts about the relation between both parties through Saṃmghabhadra’ suggestive evidence.
Vasubandhu was belong to school of Foreign(Bahirdeśaka) also called as Gandhāra or Western(Pāścāttya) at first. This school was a heretic in the inside of Sarvāstivāda opposed to Kāśmīra Vaibhāṣika.
But a Sautrāntika of Sthavira Śrīlāta, based in the Eastern(perhaps Ayodhyā), as those who succeeded to Dārṣṭāntika, which was a different school from Sarvāstivāda. Namely, according to Mahāvibhāṣaśāstra,Masters of Gandhāra differed from Dārṣṭāntika in school and phase,therefore Vasubandhu(or his purvācārya) and the Sautrāntika of Śrīlāta who succeeded to them perhaps did so.
However, Vasubandhu who associated with one sect of Sthavira wrote Abhidharmakoṣabhāṣya based on their thinking. Thus, the Sautrāntika in the Koṣabhāṣya almost referred to the sect. But he also reported that the theory of Masters of Gandhāra which he actively sympathized with was Sautrāntika(i.e., foreign Sautrāntika)’s.
Therefor he was recognized not as ‘master of Sarvāstivāda (Abhidharmika) in the Gandhāra’ but as ‘the one who associated with Sautrāntika(or Dārṣṭāntika)’. Later, some commentators also understood him as Sautrāntika.
But Saṃghabhadra who lived in the same age as him understood him as ‘the one with the same views(同見者)’ who turned against Vibhāṣa of Sarvāstivāda and who sympathized with one sect of Sthavira Śrīlāta, and often asked him not to associate with them. It was probably because he originally belonged to the Gandhāra school.
